Response to Foer #1

Oskar is probably the most unique 9-year-old in the world. Most kids his age have been shielded from serious life issues. Oskar is unique because he has experienced more than others his age. Oskar’s father died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. This tragedy has clearly affected his mentality and causes him to view things more like a 23-year-old than a kid.

With the death of Oskar’s father, the only family he has left is his mother and grandma. He and his mother are not very close and had very different responses to his father’s death. We see his mother trying to move on with her new “friend” and Oskar occupies his mind and time trying to discover the mystery behind his dad’s key. He is very thoughtful and more insightful than most people. He complains about having nightmares and “heavy boots.” I expect Oskar to find someone or something on his mission that will finally allow him to find peace with the world, similar to when his grandparents met.

Response to “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”

Oskar Schell is the definition of a nine year old in a 25 year old man’s body. His thoughts are not of the average nine year old and his actions are definitely not of nine year old. Jonathan Safran Foer allows his readers to experience a different kind of protagonist. Oskar is much more adventurous, creative, and ambitious than many characters that we see in most fictional novels.

I feel that the novel itself is a very creative piece because it is a simple read with a difficult concept. It’s an easy read because of the storyline being about 9/11 and following Oskars journey, but it’s also difficult because the author incorporates random letters (marriage), creative images (p. 47-49), and makes the novel a mystery.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is definitely a movie that I’m looking forward to seeing next year! I mean how many nine year olds tell women their beautiful just because their fat? And who doesn’t like Sandra Bullock ?!?! =)

I chose to put this image in my post because when the woman ask the man to marry her I found it to be so random and funny , because it reminded me of the candy hearts with messages on them.
