  1. Google Wave is a brand new platform that incorporates all the 5 C’s: Communication, Collaboration, Community, Creativity and Convergence. It allows users to share pictures, embed videos, etc at the same time combine other google applications like google maps and google calendar all into customized blocks that anyone can practically self-edit on the fly. Newsrooms have really been benefiting from this as it allows them to almost directly engage with their audience.

Google Wave allows newsrooms to invite their audience members to directly participate on news stories. This is how the platform engages in active communication and collaboration with one another. Much like Google Docs, everyone who is typing can see others online and typing in real time so this way it feels in a sense more personal and a more social way to connect with others. Stephanie Yiu, RedEye’s web editor, a company that started a wave in November, says: “It’s a lot more live than Twitter because it’s like you can see people typing and everybody gets to know each other,” “It’s really about connecting with our readers on a new platform. We’re learning with our readers and moving forward together.”

In turn, these waves are ultimately built as local communities. “waves become a vehicle to create an engaged local community who can also play a role in the newsroom. What makes Google Wave so useful is the community building aspect, according to Yiu. “The great thing is once it ends at 11 o’clock, it keeps on going. They keep on talking,” she said. Yiu is hoping it will be a cool way to get feedback, such as movie reviews, from their readers that that they can also run in the RedEye print product, which is something they’re already doing with Twitter.

The fact that it converges all applications of Google is of high notable prominence. It employs the use convergence this way and lastly it is also very very creative in this sense. Google Wave is also creative because it even allowed blog posts become a public wave.
What I am most interested in learning about this semester is if all this new media will pose any threats to society. Instead of helping us, will it eventually be bad for us?
