From the Mayor’s Office Internship Program:

The Mayor’s Office Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain experience and develop the capacity to solve New York City’s most pressing issues. The mission of the Mayor’s Office Internship Program is to build a diverse pipeline of future public service leaders. This highly selected diverse group of men and women collaborate with staff to better the Office of the Mayor and New York City.

Major Responsibilities and Components of the Program

  • Work Assignment: Interns are placed in specific departments for the duration of the internship program and will work on a range of projects and tasks including, but not limited to: conducting research, attending meetings, managing incoming inquiries, data analysis, drafting briefings, staffing events, outreach and special projects.
  • Government Engagement: Interns will participate in a bi-weekly Speaker Series at City Hall with guest speakers including Deputy Mayors, Commissioners, Program Directors and other senior staff. Interns will also be provided with the opportunity to tour various Mayors’ Office facilities.
  • Service Project: In collaboration with NYC Service, the volunteering arm of New York City, Mayor’s Office interns will come together as a group to coordinate a service project that will impact not only our most deserving communities but countless New Yorkers that are in need.

 

The New York State Assembly Internship

The New York State Assembly is looking for interns for the Spring semester. This internship is a great opportunity for students who wish to pursue his/her career in public affairs in the future. During the internship, interns will

  1. Get a $6,200 stipend
  2. Stay in Albany, working minimum 30 hours a week
  3. 12 credits will be allocated: 3 internship credits (POL 5452) and 3 “Special Topics” courses, for example, Legislative Politics, Urban Politics, NYC Politics.

To apply for this internship, students need to

  1. Complete the application form
  2. Two letters of recommendation
  3. A concise writing sample which provides a good indication of the student’s research and communication abilities

Intern at Equal Justice America

Equal Justice America is a independent non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation and national leader in providing opportunities for law students to work with organization who provide civil legal services to those most in need. We are in the early phases of developing an alumni association for our 4,300 past fellows and are in need of a social media and journalism volunteer. These are unpaid positions but wonderful opportunities for students looking to explore careers in nonprofit work, social media marketing and strategy, journalism, communications, and law. Interns at Senator Schumer’s office (Summer & Fall)

Senator Schumer’s office is currently looking for students for our Summer and Fall Internship sessions at our New York City office.

This internship program offers insightful hands-on experience in the operation of a Senate Regional Office. Intern responsibilities typically include: researching local issues, assisting in constituent service, preparing press clips, scanning various local media outlets, assisting at press conferences, and coordinating event logistics.

They are seeking current students or recent graduates from any course of study who have enthusiasm for government and politics.

This internship is unpaid, but we work with students if the school offers course credit.

Economic Opportunity & Regulatory Compliance

The Division of Economic Opportunity & Regulatory Compliance (“EORC”) oversees the agency’s compliance with various federal, state, and local regulatory and statutory requirements.  EORC’s work is at the cross section of many important and exciting policy issues impacting New York City, including:

  • investigating allegations of wage theft and enforcing labor standards requirements to ensure that workers helping to build New York City’s affordable housing are paid prevailing wage rates;
  • revising and operationalizing the agency’s language access plan to ensure that limited English proficiency persons have equal access to the agency’s services;
  • assisting the M/WBE officer with setting, tracking and enforcing the agency’s goals for contracting and subcontracting with minority- and women-owned business enterprises; and
  • educating developers, contractors and the public about fair housing laws and working with the New York City Commission on Human Rights to resolve fair housing complaints.

Internship Description

Economic Opportunity & Regulatory Compliance is seeking an Analytics Intern to work on projects that include data gathering, analysis, report design and generation, scheduling, and other projects as needed.  Interns will work closely with the Division to analyze data that will be used for decision-making.

The ideal candidate will:

  • be detail-oriented;
  • have strong verbal and written communication;
  • have proficient analytical skills, data cleansing and data manipulation skills;
  • have a working grasp of Microsoft Power BI and Office.
  • have the ability to present dense data in an easily digestible form;
  • have excellent customer service skills; and
  • have any combination of education, training, and experience in an office setting.

Duration: 8-12 week commitment

Hours: Flexible within Monday-Friday 8 am-5 pm

Congressman Hakeem Jeffries District Office Internship Program offers college and graduate students the opportunity to learn about the United States Congress as well as the 8th Congressional District of New York, which includes portions of Brooklyn and Queens. The office is currently seeking committed applicants on a rolling basis to intern at both the Central Brooklyn and South Brooklyn Offices.

Interns will:

  •   Assist with office administrative tasks including, answering the telephone, preparation of special mailings and constituent data entry.
  •   Greet and welcome office visitors.
  •   Assist staff during office sponsored events, such as Town Halls and community meetings.
  •   Assist staff with special projects, including research memos.
  •   Gain valuable knowledge on how a Congressional District Office operates.

CUNY Washington DC Summer Internship

CUNY Washington DC Summer Internship

Internship opportunities for CUNY students extend beyond the borders of New York City and State. CUNY offers its own summer internship program in the nation’s capital. The CUNY Washington, D.C. Internship Program runs from early June to the end of July (8 weeks).  It is a highly competitive and intensive program that offers CUNY students the opportunity to work in the offices of U.S. representatives and senators, congressional committees, federal agencies and at a variety of national and international non-governmental organizations. CUNY Washington, D.C. Internship students work full time at their placements and are provided with an award to offset living costs. CUNY also covers housing costs. In addition to their office responsibilities, interns fulfill the academic requirements associated with the program by maintaining a journal of their daily experiences, submitting written reports to their Washington sponsors, attending weekly colloquia that feature prominent members of the Washington D.C. community, writing reaction papers to those colloquia and producing major research papers for evaluation by the faculty, Prof. MK Kang.
