Syllabus Review

Lesson Materials: PowerPoint Presentation

Lesson Objectives: Understand syllabus policies; understand the sequenced writing approach and major assignments; learn about classmates and professor; produce a writing sample

Connection to Major Paper/Project: This class is connected to the first major assignment because it includes an overview of expectations, assignment requirements and how to complete these.

Connection to Course Goals: The class encourages you to think of writing as a process, highlighting the sequenced writing approach.

Activities:

  1. Introductions: We will briefly introduce ourselves and go over course information such as section, office hours, etc..
  2. Introductory Scavenger Hunt: You will be grouped in random breakout rooms. In those rooms, use the scavenger hunt worksheet to ask and answer a series of questions that focus on introductions and give you the opportunity to meet each other. Then, we will all return to the main room and you will be asked to say something about the classmates you just met.
  3. Syllabus and sequenced writing approach: The lecturer will go over the syllabus with you, including policy on absences and the importance of conferences.
  4. Diagnostic writing: Write a short narrative, describing how you became interested in your chosen major. Your writing should be a narrative, and should vividly and completely capture the thoughts and motivations you had and have about your selected course of study. You can (but don’t have to) include dialogue. Use descriptive writing that shows and doesn’t tell your reader why you chose the major you chose. When you have finished, upload your narrative to Blackboard.
  5. Generating Research Topics: Create and fill in a table following the instructions in the PowerPoint presentation.
  6. Faculty Specializations: Explore the College website to learn about Baruch business faculty specializations and identify 2-5 areas of interest.
Homework:
  • Connect the ideas you generated in class in the table with the list of professors’ specializations.
  • List three possible research topics that you might be interested in pursuing this semester.
  • Explore the Freakonomics website and identify at least one podcast that connects with at least one of your possible research topics.
  • Be prepared to discuss these ideas for research topics in class.
  • Email your Gmail address to [email protected]
