Lady Montagu’s Letter

In Lady Montagu’s Letter, she writes to her daughter in order to give her advice in raising her own daughter and society’s expectations. Lady Montagu not only cares for her daughter but also her granddaughter. She writes to her daughter in hopes of giving the best she can for her granddaughter as she grows up. Because of the time period of this letter, it was written in a formal tone even with the intimacy between a mother and daughter relationship. In the beginning, Lady Montagu begins with compliments towards her daughter and how she expects her granddaughter to be like her and have “good sense”.

As her audience is her daughter, there is an easy path to appeal to the use of pathos and ethos. A mother and daughter already have a special connection even just the fact that a mother gave birth to her daughter. Therefore, it is easier for Lady Montagu to appeal to the use of pathos based on memories and events shared together. She is a mother so she naturally has the appeal to the use of ethos. She has the credibility of a mother and past experience and she can use this to give her daughter and granddaughter advice about the world and how to be good sensed.

Lady Montagu says, “The knowledge of numbers is one of the chief distinctions between us and brutes” which proves that she has a strong argument towards her point and advice of how to be a good sensed lady in this society. By doing this, it is more likely that Lady Montagu’s daughter will take her mother’s advice in hopes to raise her own daughter in a well-fashioned way. Lady Montagu also includes a quote from an Athenian general/historian to strengthen her credibility in her advice towards her daughter.

Overall, Lady Montagu wants the best for her daughter and granddaughter so by educating them with what she knows, they wouldn’t end up falling under society’s norms of women. This letter is personal, yet formal only because of the way letters were written at that time. However, it was purely from the heart and the purpose was personal. It is also a private letter because of how this view Lady Montagu had was against how society views women. It was a strong and personal letter.
