From watching The Great Hack I learned a great deal of information about the collection of user data everywhere. Using this information they can do anything from targeting you with propaganda, to viewing your all your conversations. These companies market all your information to other companies, and make a massive profit off of our data. They make billions of dollars. This film specifically focuses on the Cambridge Analytica, who took great advantage over the use of our online data during the 2016 presidential election. They used Facebook as a sort of conduit to collect data on every user and all their friends in order to fill their feeds with informations to persuade them, whether the information was false or not. This company worked directly with the Trump campaign, unknowing collecting all this information people to serve their needs. They completely took advantage of what we view as our private information. Almost everyone today has some form of social media whether it be Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn, and they took advantage of that. Professor David Carroll was interested in the exploitation of this data and when Cambridge Analytica refused to show him the data of his that was taken, he decided to take them to court. Millions of peoples information was used to help in Trump’s campaign and election.
To compare this movie to “Death of the Private Self,” it was interesting to see the role Facebook played in our public and private lives. Both show how our privacy is stripped from us by this platform, but I feel the film did a much better job at conveying that message in a way that was sure to convince the audience without looking too biased. Zuckerberg’s response was as expected, he didn’t know how to respond, how could he? Both the film and the article show how the advancements of technology and the use of social media platforms like Facebook, have destroyed the concept of “the private self” for millions of people.
