The film, The Great Hack, is a documentary about a data company named Cambridge Analytica. Cambridge Analytica stole personal information from many people. Professor David Carroll became interested when he had found out that his personal information has been leaked. This resulted in Professor David Carroll requesting for his data, and when Cambridge Analytica did not follow through with the request, he took them to court because he had wanted privacy for his personal information and data. Taking Cambridge Analytica to court resulted in Facebook getting involved as well. Facebook was able to get personal information and data from its users and also shared the obtained information with other companies. We were able to see that for the presidential election in 2016, Cambridge Analytica had used information from many Facebook users. This was done by advertising ads to persuade the users. We were also able to see parts of Zuckerberg’s trial. In the documentary, we were able to see that Facebook has stolen personal information from millions of its users. Based on the film, The Great Hack, I think big data is all the data that the companies collect from the users and using that to find out what people are interested in.

There are many strong connections between the article, “Death of the Private Self” and the documentary, “The Great Hack.” Both are about social media and the dangers of social media. Both of these sources are ultimately telling the readers/viewers that social media is dangerous and that we need to be careful with what we post because once it’s on the internet, it will be on the internet forever. We can also see that both “Death of the Private Self” and “The Great Hack” are about Facebook.
