“A House of My Own” by Sandra Cisneros is the memoir of the Latino novelist consisting of forty pieces of writing. Cisneros tells the background of the memoir and what it entails in the introduction. She tells the story of her life between 1984-2014, including her many travels and major life events and shows her journey identifying as a writer.

She makes the decision to go to Greece where she actually finished writing one of her most popular books, “The House on Mango Street,”(which I actually love) in chapter one of many, Hydra House.  She describes Greece as sort of an escape from her enemy in Chicago where she was able to live a dream life spending her time writing and doing what she loves. Hydra House doesn’t only signify her attempt to prove her “nemesis” wrong, but she was also able to grow as a person and realize her passion to write. The house was beautiful though being just a cottage, and inspired her as well as proving that she didn’t need luxury and sophistication to admire and appreciate it. Her move to the islands started as an attempt to sophisticate herself through travels, while trying to prove a point to her boyfriend in Chicago. But instead she just ended growing as a writer and a person, while finding herself, which is the true significance of it.

  1. I agree that by putting herself in a totally different environment, Cisneros was truly able to grow as a person and give birth to one of the most famous literatures out there.
