In “No Place Like Home,” Cisneros describes home as not just a physical place you live, like a house or an apartment. Rather home is a place where you grow and flourish, where you become your true self. Her inspiration drew from her travels, as is for many other writers, and specifically talks about Iowa. Thats where she found her home, and it had nothing to do with the physical place. Iowa is where she was able to feel really connected to her writing, and the book she began writing there she describes as “shelter[ing] [her] during [her] time there.” Home isn’t a place where you live, or where your family abides, but where you can be yourself and express yourself honestly and to your highest potential. She describes finding her home in several pieces of literature, rather than at college. She feels more at home in places where she can write passionately and that’s not something she feels in Chicago. Thinking of the way that Cisneros describes home, mine would be anywhere with a pen and paper and music playing. Any time I feel anxious or out of place, I tend to just pop my airpods in and doodle because it brings me peace and I genuinely enjoy it.  Also anyplace where my friends and family are is home to me. That’s why even though I love living in New York, I’ll always consider Orlando more of my hometown because that’s where I grew up, and all my close family still lives. Home is where you belong, not when or where, but who and why.

  1. I always found New York home, I found that leaving the place your most used to feels uncomfortable to an extent. Its interesting that Orlando is like that to you.
