Cisneros talks about home in both “No Place Like Home” and “Only Daughter” as not a physical location that you go to, but of memories, and of the importance of self-realization. Cisneros describes how she finds Home through her writing and her books. It something that she feels connected with, and goes on to describe how other writers do the same in their books. “And so, I find myself coming home when I read Thomas Wolfe. The Gants are my family, their crowded rooms share intimately with strangers called family.” I also liked her other quote, “Maybe I was never more homeless than during those two years in graduate school. I found my home in the country-folk monologues of Mexican writer Juan Rulfo, the anti-poetics of Chilean poet Nicanor Parra, the rage of Malcolm X.” This quote shows how you don’t need to exactly be at a place in order to feel like you are at home, you can feel this way in many different ways. I personally think of home as a place where you feel comfortable and safe. Yes, being with family is great too, but I do go to my girlfriends house and spend time with her family, and I feel at home there as well. Home doesn’t have to be a single place, or even a place at all. Home can be with the people you love, the people who truly mean a lot to you, it depends on the person. Home is where I can act like myself, and not have to worry about how to act, or try to be somebody I’m not. In the past few months all I’ve been doing is being stuck in my apartment. With the Covid Virus going around, I’m pretty sure everybody has a certain take on “home.” Maybe some people don’t feel like they are at home due to not being able to be with the people that they usually spend their time with. Perhaps some people find home in ways such as reading and writing, like the stories that Cisneros has written. Even the people with No homes can find something that represent home to them. Even if it’s a certain bench where they don’t get bothered, or perhaps a subway station where it’s warm and easy to access, it’s where one finds the most comfort in a time of discomfort. I am home with my family, and that is home to me. When I move out, I’ll have items that probably represent my childhood, pictures of my family, and others things to keep that memory with me. I’ll be comfortable, which is how being at home should feel like.
