In “Notes on My Mother” by Hilton Als is about the author’s childhood and his connection with his mother. In the article, Als describes how he and his mother lacked connection like the rest of the family and also describes the slow death of his mother. He and his mother lacked connection like the rest of the family because his mother has remarried. However, he found out that connecting through similar experiences is a better way to bond with her than going face-to-face because she was a complex person. The first quote I decided to write about is, “I was so lonely knowing her; she was so busy dying.” I chose this quote because it was the most interesting quote out of all because it seemed to have multiple meanings behind it. The first obvious meaning is that his mother is literally dying. The second meaning is that his relationship between him and his mother is dying. I think these meanings do make sense because Als mother did not put in the effort when it came to connecting Als and his step-father.
