A house of my own serves as a Memoir for writer Sandra Cisneros. She talks about her journey to becoming a writer in the introductory section and gives a brief synopsis as to what she will be talking about in the rest of the book. She also talks about her early writing and how she feels that she did not tell the real story of her life in the short autobiographical interview she had given. She goes on to say that the only way to really show the readers who she is, is through her memories. She includes the quote “My memory knows more about me than I do. It doesn’t lose what deserves to be saved.” even more solidifying that she wants the reader to know everything, the good and the bad. In the first chapter “Hydra House”, Cisneros talks about her move to Greece and what inspired it. She talks about the struggles of becoming a writer and how she felt as though she was giving everyone and everything her time but her writing. She moved to the Hydra House as an escape from all her distractions and frankly herself. She says “God, if there was anyone I needed to get away from, it was me.”, expressing her internal conflicts towards herself and her writing.  She goes on to explain how she loved her house even though it was nothing special, it inspired her, it helped her grow and ultimately become a great writer. I could imagine myself in a Hydra House of my own, however, sadly I could only imagine. To do what Cisneros did, pick up everything and just move to a different country to “find yourself” is just highly unrealistic for me. What Sandra Cisneros did takes a lot of courage, nowadays we see a lot of young adults going into professions they don’t like because of pressures caused by parents, money and social standard. Now yes, we are all encouraged to do what we love and not just go into a profession because of the money but nine times out of ten, students will not do what they love because of the low income they will make doing it. Personally, I feel like, at the end of the day, everything basically revolves around money. Even your education. The cost of tuition at a college has a great impact on where you decide to continue your life as a student. No one wants to drown in student loans, so, the student tends to pick whatever is most affordable for them whether they like it or not. It takes courage to do what she did, I fight with myself every day over what profession to pursue because personally I am put under the pressure of family to have pursue a career with a high paying salary. Luckily, after deciding to pursue the career I am and learning more about it, I’ve come to love it. However, the sad truth is that is not the case for everyone and it is very unfortunate if you ask me.
