In this letter, written by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, it discusses how she wants her daughter to raise her granddaughter, and for her granddaughter to pursue a higher education. She wants her granddaughter to not be compared to uneducated people, and to live her life with her chin up high. she gives advice to her granddaughter, that Its effective to read often, and  she gives her daughter good advice, telling her that these certain parenting skills will make her grand daughter live a happier, and more beneficial life. You can tell they may have a strained relationship because she has to write a letter to the daughter, and Also, the last few lines of the letter seem that they may disagree a lot. “I am afraid you will think this a very long and insignificant letter. I hope the kindness of the design will excuse it, being willing to give you every proof in my power that I am.” The tone is very formal. My guess is that this piece was written a ling time ago. To say this argument is “surprising” is questionable. As I am reading this essay it’s basically telling me that this grandmother cares deeply for her daughter and granddaughter, and wish nothing but the best for the both of them. You can tell by the way she writes that they don’t talk often, but that doesn’t stop her from trying to reach out to them. To put the rhetorical aspect on this essay, I would most likely compare it with the rhetorical appeal of reason. Logical Appeal, or “Logos.” The grandmother is providing reason, and trying to be as informing as possible. Another rhetorical aspect that we can look on this letter is the “ethical appeal”

Ethos. Lady Mary Montagu gives her Credibility as a mother herself, who has clearly been in the same spot as her daughter before. It gives her the authority to speak her mind, and to instruct her family on how to continue their lives. She only wants the best for the both of them. All in all, Lady Montagu is a caring grandmother, who voices her opinion, (which does have meaning) and delivers an effective and caring argument.

  1. I agree. After reading the last line of the letter, I made an assumption that it seems like Wortley and her daughter must’ve had some fallout or disagreement for her to write her this lenghty letter to persuade her.

  2. I agree I think there was a time were the two didn’t see eye to eye which made them separate and now the mother doesn’t want her daughter to make the same mistakes with the granddaughter.
