In Barack Obama’s “Dreams from My Father- A Story of Race and Inheritance”, he talks about his childhood and life in living in America including events in his life that ultimately created who he is as a person today. He talks about his family and how he was raised by his mom and grandparents in Hawaii because his father abandoned his family when he was just 2 years old. After college, Obama went back to Kenya to learn more about his father. Obama learned about the incident where a racist tried to buy his father’s apology. As an African American, Obama and his family faced many racial problems and injustice. Everyone came to America for the American Dream, but it was nowhere easy or close to the idolized “American Dream”. Obama and his family fought for the American dream and the stereotype as he became successful, including becoming one of the most favored president in America.
My grandfather would shake his head and get out of his chair to flip on the TV set. “Now there’s something you can learn from your dad,” he would tell me. “Confidence. The secret to a man’s success.”
That stood out to me because even after Obama finds out about his father’s past, he was able to learn something out of him. I believe that his grandfather’s advice that confidence is the secret to success really took Obama a very long way in life and I think it is a great advice to everyone. Without confidence you will be insecure about your work and would lead to you second-guessing everything you do so it will end up with you not being able to do anything.
