In Beyoncé’s documentary, “Life is but a Dream”, I believe she was trying to express the process, the struggles of her daily life as a celebrity, performer, and influencer. She does this by showing sides of her tired and vulnerable stages, including her miscarriage. She shows that there is a side opposite from all the fame and money lifestyle and she is just like the rest of us. All the breakdowns that she shows in the documentary help the audience understand that she has her own personal issues. Although the documentary didn’t entirely show the other side of Beyonce’s life, it was enough to know some parts of her private life.
In the New York Times article “Another Cog in the Machinery Divahood” by Alessandra Stanly, she argues that Beyonce’s documentary doesn’t show the real life of Beyonce because they only show parts that gave the audience feel sympathy towards Beyonce in order to give herself a better reputation. I believe it is a valid argument but Beyonce was showing a side that people haven’t seen before and I do believe that people will act more when it comes to having to record your life. People tend to over exaggerate how they actually are in videos. Personally, I think that she was feeling how she felt but she would just exaggerate it more for the audience. In my opinion, I believe that even if she is, she gave raw footage to the audience that many celebrities couldn’t even think about doing because they like the perfect image. Even the fact that she was able to release the document was courageous of her because everyone has their own private lives that aren’t shared with anyone, including Alessandra Stanly.
