Big Data works, as explained in this film, by collecting information often unknowingly on users through social media platforms. An example of one social media platform, which provided such data, was Facebook started by Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook, apparently unknowingly provided information to a company called Cambridge Analytica. Specifically companies like Cambridge Analytica would run an app on Facebook that would take a user’s data linking them into a portal of friends to create a network of people under their databases. Cambridge Analytica would then would then formulate advertisements and marketing tools that would supposedly shift voters on the edge into going into a certain agenda. This was done for many politicians across the world including Donald Trump, the United Kingdom’s Leave the Party movement, and more. Overall, Cambridge Analytica was a strong tool used by powerful leaders to continuously/strive to keep themselves in power by altering the subconscious mind when viewing advertisements and marketing tactics. Professor David Carrol started a movement in obtaining his data back from Cambridge Analytica exposing them as corrupt. He did so in order to show that the power that data companies such as Cambridge Analytica, had the ability to track a “flood of data” from users that was able to exchange as a commodity between tech companies. By raising awareness in this issue he was able to inspire those active on the internet, to be mindful of the power of large tech corporations and to be aware when digesting information dispersed on the internet. From reading “Death of Private Self” and watching “ The Great Hack”, I was able to see that both talked about the overwhelming grasp that tech companies had on our data. As consumers and individuals, both the article and the movie stressed the importance of being aware of this theme. However, the article stressed more the background of facebook, twitter and the influence those companies had on a younger demographic, while the movie stressed the background of Cambridge Analytica and its influence on a political environment. Specifically “Death of Private Self” seemed to focus more on Zuckerberg and his history with the creation of facebook; how facebook managed to warp into a harbor of consumer data. “The Great Hack”, spoke more as to the trials which happened in both the UK and the US, surrounding Cambridge Analytica’s activities. Both mediums were able to add to my deeper understanding of the daily activities on the internet on such social media platforms.

  1. Companies always collect our data and invade our privacy, but it seems that the right wing, uses it more to advertise for their campaigns. What if both Trump and Clinton used this tool to persaude Facebook users. Would this be as big of an issue, now that it seems like a fair election?
