After reading the rhetoric article, I began to understand the definition more clearly. There are different forms of rhetorical appeals that are displayed throughout our lives. The Ad that I have chosen is the ASPCA Animal support commercial. This commercial has been around since I was a child, and I am sure many people have seen it as well. Not only does it have an effect of sadness on viewers in general, but pet owners like myself, who would feel even more inclined to provide support to the organization. ASPCA stands for “American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.” They are a not for profit, and their goal is to prevent all forms of animal cruelty. They also focus on the fact that animals are just as important as people, and they make sure that all abused animals will be saved from their sadistic oppressors. Instead of being allowing the abuse to continue, the commercial clearly portrays that people should provide their pets with the love, care, and medical attention that they deserve. The goal is to make the viewer subscribe monthly, and pay 18 dollars a month, (60 cents per day) to provide funds for the organization that rescue these animals, which will allow them to provide shelter, food, and other medical necessities to those animals in need. The song, “Angel” , sang by Sarah McLachlan plays in the background of the advertisement, as a slideshow of videos play. The videos show the sad and previously abused animals, which is enough to make anybody shed a tear. This form of rhetoric appeal Is “value.” This Pathos, share of Emotions, is bound to make the viewer feel sadness, and compassion. One of the main goals of the commercial is to reach out to humans, and have hope that it can persuade them to provide their support for these animals. This emotion is specifically brought out in the advertisement because it is the number one way for the viewer to get a sense of what is happening in the real life situation of these animals. Every time that I would see the ad, I could only think “what if this was my pet” and my heart breaks. There are thousands of animals that are abused daily. 60 cents a day is just pocket change, and many of us wouldn’t be affected financially at all from the small donation that could have a huge impact!
