Cambridge case

Well, Big data is collected from a group of individuals based on what they have previously searched before, and other key terms. That’s why you tend to see Ads pop up of something similar that you’ve either looked up, or have seen at one point. In the film that we watched, “The Great Hack” professor  David Carol is in a battle with Cambridge Analytica over the collection of his data. He wishes to have them return it, but they simply cannot do that. During the 2016 Election, the firm Cambridge Analytica who worked for Senator Ted Cruz, (and later passed on that data to Donald Trump’s campaign) which was used to build detailed profiles on people with the data points collected from adults in the United States. The data was collected from Social media Platform Facebook, Created by Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook provided certain information to Cambridge, who then later began making the different forms Of advertisement, Ads, and other sorts of ways to persuade, or change the views of people, in order for them to vote differently. It was an unethical Tactic used to retrieve data and other personal information from People who had no idea it was even happening. A trial was Held for Mark Zuckerberg on this matter, In which his Company has provided the Information on millions of people to Cambridge. David Carol’s Goal was to get more people to be aware how easy it is for your information to be taken, and without you even knowing it. That these “big people” in power are able to do whatever they can in order for them to stay on-top. In connection with the Article we read in the beginning of the  semester, “Death of a private self” and the documentary  we watched today, “The Great hack” we can see the connection of Data being taken, and the power that Social media has. You have to be extremely careful when doing anything on the internet. We are in a different time. We live in an advanced era, where technology rules the world, and will continue to get stronger. You are not protected. Your information is taken, stored, stolen, all without you not even knowing it. People rely upon technology, when it could be their worst enemy. Although both the Article and Movie talked about different points and topics, It is clear to see that your information is not safe.

  1. I agree, the connection of both the documentary and the article, while not exactly referring to the same exact issue, they both talk about the same general theme of lack of privacy due to social media.

  2. The fact that anyone could just take our personal data is just out of this world. It makes you wonder why does everyone let these corporations and businesses take it, adding on to the fact that there should be more attention drawn to this.
