After reading “What is rhetoric?” and given this prompt I immediately thought of the Superbowl and the series of great commercials they have each year. The one that stood out most to me, and what many people actually claim to have the been the best one this year was the advertisement for Rocket Mortgage with Jason Momoa. As stated in the reading, rhetoric is the “available means of persuasion.” To attract the audience they utilized ethos and pathos. In attempts to gain new customers, Rocket Mortgage firstly chose to advertise during the Superbowl as millions are watching, which was strategic. Also, Jason Momoa is an extremely popular and favored actor especially at the moment, and he would be sure the catch the eyes of viewers. This ad appealed to the audience’s emotions as it showed Momoa–famous actor–stripping himself down to feel “comfortable” at home. The plot of the commercial involved him arriving home after being papavrazzied, and stripping his muscles to reveal some scrawny arms and skinny body compared his usual buffness. The entire concept of the commercial was to convey comfort in your own home, escaping the outside and truly being yourself. If even big shot “Baywatch-esque” Momoa could be himself using Rocket Mortgage, you could too! Even his wife, Lisa Bonet appeared helping him lift weights. In a way the commercial allows you to relate to these celebrities and appeals to us through emotion and humor as well as credibility, using a well known actor.
