1.) The article argues how facebook attracts us to be on it every minute of our life. Due to us having our phone on us and having social media on it “when does the performing ever stop?” (John Harris) Social media is leading to us being entertainment to each other by letting people keep up with our lives. Due to us sharing most of our life or sometimes just some will also allow for others to criticize us leading back to what John Flores stated in his article Death of the Private Self “who we really are beyond the attention and judgments of others, and whether we even know any more.” Our entire lives we force ourselves to not have a break from social media due to most of us being addicted to it myself included. We need to be able to spend a bit of time away from social media to get to know ourselves.
2.) I feel like I have lost a lot of my time because of social media and changed to be the person I show on social media. Reason behind me changing slowly is because on the social media platform that I use the most which is Instagram I tend to try to show the best side of me. As I started to become more active on the social media platform I felt like I couldn’t portray that side of me on instagram and not be like that outside of social media. I felt like I would just get the judgement of others for faking something and me living a completely other lifestyle to the one I show. That’s why now I rarely share anything on social media to keep my life more private and post only key moments i’d want to remember in the future for myself. I was in 5th grade when I first got my social media which was on facebook. I used it to keep in contact with my family from facebook and my friends when I was in Mexico. Me and my close friends in my opinion online lives is fairly the same to our actual lives ever since we graduated from high school and entered college because of the significant decrease in the amount we use it. Some of my friends even deleted social media completed to be able to focus more on their actual lives and since they saw social media being a negative energy in their life.
I can relate to your reasoning on rarely sharing or posting on social media in order to keep your life more private. I feel like not everyone should know what’s going in my life and only share/post something if it’s something important to me.
I was exactly where you were when it came to Instagram. Just like you, I believe that it is better to post less and make my life more private. However, even if I do keep a lot of my life to myself, I like to spend a lot of time on Instagram watching videos and memes.
