Fiction vs Nonfiction

According to Julia Novak’s “Experiments in Life Writing,” she points out the differences between nonfiction and fiction writings throughout the 20 and 21st century. She also addresses combining nonfiction and fiction in literature including biographies and autobiographies. She also talks about this experiment being tested in modern Europe. Fiction wouldn’t be considered fiction without some type of nonfiction. Some parts of fiction combine parts of nonfiction by using factual details to portray the author’s purpose. Authors may include fiction in nonfiction stories to make the story more interesting. For example, “Hidden Figures” and “The Boy with Striped Pajamas” are both stories that are fiction but based on true stories. Authors and movie producers are seen to add fictional details only for the audience’s pleasure.

I believe with this mix of fiction and nonfiction, authors can express their story in the most interesting way possible. Although the story might not be entirely true if it makes the audience happy then that may be all that matters. Of course, when it comes to news stories it should be entirely nonfiction but I think the mixture of nonfiction stories makes the story fascinating and grasping. Authors and movie producers need their audience to like their writing to obviously bring in money.

I also believe that not every single nonfiction writings should be considered nonfiction because the facts in that writing were based on a person’s perspective. As many people already know, knowing one perspective of a story doesn’t mean it was an accurate story. There was a post I saw on Instagram of Prince Harry putting up the 3 point sign (looks like an ok sign). However, in a different paparazzi’s perspective, it looked like he was throwing up his middle finger.  From that paparazzi’s point of view, he or she had proof that Prince Harry was sticking up his middle finger. However, just because it was right in his/her perspective doesn’t mean it is an accurate story. Therefore, I believe not all nonfiction stories/writings are actually nonfiction.

Fiction is a type of writing that is based on untrue facts and imagination. It is based on fantasy and untrue events. However, it can include true facts such as places,  objects, and more. Therefore, although the story may be fabricated, there are factual aspects in fictional writings. For nonfiction writings, there are based on true events and people, but there are some details that could’ve been fabricated to create a better, more interesting story.  Even in autobiographies, whos to say the author didn’t lie about their own life in order to grasp the audience’s attention?

  1. I wholeheartedly agree with you last question. There is no way to fact check every single piece of non fiction out there. We can never know if a piece is truly non fictional or not.
