This author argues that Facebook has diminished the barrier between our public and private lives by stating how everyone on Facebook has uploaded posts about their private life so often to the point where their life is basically not private anymore. He would argue points where people don’t have to know other people’s life updates on social media. John Harris states, “There is no need to write posts about what you just had for dinner, or the funny thing the dog did…” He clearly felt negatively towards the overuse of Facebook in people’s daily lives. He also says that Facebook spoils our moment of reflection without social media and our electronics. He says this because people are relying on social media for everything these days and there is no time to spend by yourself without the heat and false news on social media. People are constantly surrounded by social media and Facebook in particular, With Facebook being created, it has led to many people, particularly younger, have their public and private lives undifferentiable.
My life has been affected by social media a lot. I kind of blame being born in a generation where technology started growing rapidly. When I was in 6th-grade I opened my first Facebook account (of course I lied about my age). I used it to see what my friends were up to or who my crush was friends with. Now looking back at it, I was so disturbed to see how unappealing I was socially and physically. Now all my 6th-grade pictures with my duck faces and filtered photos will stay on the internet forever. I eventually got rid of Facebook because it got boring and no one was using it. Then Instagram started to trend. I got my Instagram account around 8th-grade. It was new and different and I had to urge to upload pictures and gain followers. I believe Instagram was the social media platform that “ruined” a lot of people’s lives. I started to take the number of likes I got very seriously. However, after a couple of years, I grew out of the phase and I just stay on Instagram for hours laughing at memes. I also like to follow outfit inspiration on Instagram. It’s funny because my friends and I were just talking about our Instagram account this morning. We were asking each other if our pictures matched who we are as a person and how we live. I believe I do. My life can be fun once in a while and I’ll post a picture on special occasions. Or, I would post a regular day-to-day picture showing my outfit. My pictures aren’t great but I think it shows most of my personality.
I agree with your statement that Instagram “ruined” our lives. Since getting it, I have been addicted and have never gotten off.
