There are lots of good advertisements out there, but there are also lots of bad ones. There are some key components to making a good advertisement as we know from the article we read. One advertisement I found that truthfully exceeds the standards of a good advertisement is the commercial for the new Mercedes-Benz EQC, Mercedes’ first fully electric car. The vehicles driving around in the commercial are all old Benz’s that customers have loved and appreciated since Mercedes started production of their automobiles. As the next car in the commercial appears to be a newer model, we are eventually presented with the new electric Mercedes EQC being driven by The Weeknd. This is where the use of ethos is shown in the advertisement. Using the Weeknd in a Mercedes ad seemed like normal people were encouraged to buy a Mercedes. In lots of today’s music, we hear about the luxury of having expensive cars that average people would never buy simply because we’d rather put a down payment on a house. A good example is the Rolls Royce Wraith that seems to be mentioned in lots of rap songs, it’s something we would all like to buy but can’t. But who wants a Rolls Royce when you can be like The Weeknd and drive a much more affordable Mercedes? It’s also another way of telling society that Mercedes makes cars for average people and the rich. Another nice addition to the commercial that reminds the viewers about the quality behind the name of the company is the small talk between The Weeknd and the young boy on the skateboard. When the boy says, “Wow, you drive electric?” while The Weeknd charges his car, he responds with, “What are you talking about? I drive a Mercedes.” The commercial then ends with a sentence on the screen reading, “It’s not just electric. It’s a Mercedes.” The purpose of this new slogan is to establish the fact that Mercedes was always known for making quality cars and they will continue to do the same as they start production of their first electric cars. As we are encouraged to do something about our climate change, many automobile makers have entered the world of electric car production and Mercedes is here to say that they will be the best at that, too. Without these rhetorical devices, advertisements would never be as successful.

  1. I like how you mentioned that with Mercedes having the Weeknd in their advertisement, it appeals to a larger audience since he is on an ad for a Mercedes instead of a car like a Rolls Royce, making it seem like a much more affordable choice for people.
