In this letter written by Lady Montagu, she offers specific advice to her daughter about how to raise her eldest daughter. It’s more than likely pretty similar to the way she raised the Countess of Bleu, as far as her education and schooling. The language used is formal, considering this is from a mother to her daughter, and it makes the reader wonder what relationship the two have. The letter was most likely intended to be private between the Countess and Lady, because it’s advice for the writer’s grandchild.
In the letter, Lady expresses her satisfaction on how smart her granddaughter is, and that she should continue to learn and grow her knowledge. Because not only will she enjoy the learning but she will also be able to avoid “expensive diversions” as Lady puts it. Lady argues that by pursuing studies and knowledge, that her granddaughter will grow into a young woman desirable for her intelligence. By just reading 2 hours a day and discussing, Lady argues that her granddaughter will far ahead where she was at her age. Lady Montagu uses the rhetorical element of emotional pathos to justify her position. She says that her intention was to give her daughter the option to stay single and be content with her home life. Lady incorporates emotion into that stating that, by encouraging education on her daughter and letting her experience things freely, allowed her to create her own life. Which she has the chance to do for her daughter. I don’t find Lady’s argument surprising at all, since that’s what she wanted for her daughter. I think what was effective in this letter was relating her granddaughter’s opportunity and her daughter’s life to on another. This may convince the Countess to teach her daughter, by her mother’s suggestions. What i do find surprising is that at the end, Lady says that the letter may not be of any use, because it contradicts most of what she said earlier.
Good use of textual evidence to support your argument.
I found it interesting too that Montague would write such a long and effort full paper just to excuse it as possibility useless. However that may be the relationship between the daughter and Montague, something to be noted in terms of their relationship.
Great summary on the letter
I know it was weird that Lady Montagu wrote that letter and excused it as a possibility it would be useless. But I think by her saying that it would make her daughter be heartfelt for her and end up listening to her advice more.
I think she might have added the last line so her daughter wouldn’t think she wasn’t being pushy.
