The Medium is the Massage

This article by Marshall McLuhan speaks about a very important idea where as society progressed technologically, we often undermine the little things of how exactly society as a whole is changing. Take for example, McLuhan talks about how instead of the message being of the importance, the medium at which the message is being brought over is rather more important. McLuhan talks about certain aspects of society such as your family, your neighborhood, education, job, government, and everyone else is affected by this change of medium. Talking about family, McLuhan brings up how your parents are the people who bring you up throughout childhood, yet with the introduction of new medium that may not be the case. Electric media such as movies and such may provide a much wider influence on shaping characteristics than your parents. Talking about the neighborhood, he points out how there is less social interaction due to such media influences, which at the time of him writing this, was mostly television. However, in this current age, this may even be more exaggerated with the availability of smartphones.

Talking about jobs, McLuhan talks about how we as people are enslaved by the jobs that put us in front of things such as computers. For example, he ironically says “Come into my parlor, said the computer to the specialist” to display how we are not in control of the computers but rather then computers enslave us into doing their work using them. As for government, he talks about how we are just walking voting booths since we sit in front of a television or a computer processing the news and information about selected candidates then just go and vote. McLuhan talks a lot about how technology affects our society and new mediums contribute to such things, but in this current age, mediums and media are much more frequent than back then and are almost required for society to work as a whole.
