I choose the text “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin because I feel like I can really relate to the story. The theme behind the story made me realize how important love is and accepting people for who they are. Love plays such a big role in life and understanding what love is or even getting loved is such a beautiful experience. The story is basically about two brothers who grew up in Harlem and Sonny the younger brother is seeking for his older brothers love and the acceptance. I can connect to this story because I have a brother myself and I understand where Sonny is coming from. The way he said, “You don’t know how much I needed to hear from you” showed me how much he wanted his brother to be there for him when he was in a very dark place. This is the same for me because when I am in a dark place, I would seek for the love that I desperately need to help myself recharge and my brother is always there to give me advice. He helps me grow as a person and he is very accepting at the end of the day like Sonny’s brother. There are times where my brother would literally argue with me with the dumbest things because he would disagree with what I am doing but at the end of the day he understands where I am coming from. This definitely has a major impact in my life because there is always someone to support me. “Sonny’s Blues” would be considered a great work and it holds such value to me. Knowing to love and accept is something everyone should learn to do, and it is relevant to each and every one of us. Especially during this time of period. No matter what type of love it is it helps us grow and learn. Through this literature you can see that when you accept someone for who they are you gain more out of it and it teaches us to appreciate each other. Instead of trying to change something because you disagree with what they are doing, learn to embrace it and allow them to shine and go their own paths. I find this super important because being love will bring you to a better place and be in a better state of mind when you are lonely. Love is so powerful, and everyone deserves to have it. This is what makes this piece of work truly admirable and it really made me rethink about my actions and how it can affect someone. The world is a very dark place and we all can put in effort to make it somewhat better for the people closest to us or even people that you don’t know. I believe that many other people would enjoy reading this text like I did since it sparks the greatness of loving and it has a very deep meaning to the story.
