by Great Works

— David Xiao

In English 2850, I really enjoyed the play Endgame by Samuel Beckett. It was one of my group assignments and I think it was a really a masterpiece. I think the relationship in the play was unusual, where the master and the servant hate each other, but throughout the play they knew they needed each other’s back. Although, the relationship between the characters were unusual, I find it very unique, which makes this a great work. It is hard to find great works that involves relationship on hatred, but at the same time their relationship is dependent on each other. I think this relates to me because back in high school, I also had a hate relationship with one of my acquittance. He was my classmate for 4 years and he always try to be my friend and always join my friend group, but we all dislike him due to his behavior. Although, we dislike him, we had to work with him in group projects and this is where our relationship depends on each other. We had to depend on each other because our group project needed communication to efficiently to bring the best to the table. This situation is similar to the Endgame because I disliked my classmate, but he wanted to be my friend and at the same our relationship was dependent on each other when there are group projects. This text gave me an insight that even when you hate someone or when someone hates you, there is a point in your life that you will need each other. There is movie called Nobody’s Perfect that has a similar relationship like the Endgame. In Nobody’s Perfect, there are two girls who hated each other back in high school and had different personalities, but one day they switch body. After going through each other’s life for a while, they realize they needed each other because without each other people would find out they switch identities. At the end both of them end up having a mix personality meaning half the time they were themselves and half the time they were the other person. This movie is related to the play because in the movie both characters hated each other, but they also need each other. This play also relate to our society in 2020 because in a working space, there’s a chance two people might hate each other due to many reasons. In a workspace, you don’t have to like everyone, matter a fact you don’t have like anyone, but do your work. Although, you dislike someone or someone dislike you at work, you still have to work together to complete your job. At the end of the day, what matter is getting your job complete and not make friends at work. At work, people are very cunning and tries to steal all your effort and work you put in, so people at work you don’t have to be friends with, but remember you will need each other to complete the job and maybe you can use them to get the credit.
