Reading Things Fall Apart was a nice change…

by Great Works

—Anonymous

Reading Things Fall Apart was a nice change from Remembering Babylon since the language was a lot simpler. Things Fall Apart has very real issues in it, which at first are hard to accept since they are almost normalized. It is important for us to learn about these issues and come to the realization that they need to be discussed for things to change. Since this novel does that I feel as though it is a great text. The twists and turns that we encounter allow for the book to remain suspenseful and interesting, while also putting in real issues. We also are taught a lot about the culture and from the point of view of the natives. Most things we learn about Igbo culture come from the perspective of the Europeans, so to hear the native’s perspective gives more light on the subject. Overall, I would consider this work to be a great work; the simple language, point of view, and realness all contribute to that.
