Amy Tans writing is a very moving piece. While listening to do background of how the writing was organized, I started to realize how effective one’s writing can be. Tan talks about being good at English as more than just being able to speak a language and understand it. Now this is an important concept not just in her writing but in everyday life. This is great work because of the amazing story Tan tells. Her story is something that many people especially kids go through growing up. For Example, Tan discusses how her mom spoke a different language, and that it was hard for people to communicate with her. In my own life I have had a similar situation, but my parents grew with me. My growth was their growth as well. As I climbed up in the United States education system I learned the language of English and was able to help my parents as well, but this was not the main point of Tans story she wanted to speak about how she challenged herself so that she would be able to be the best at whatever she put her mind to. Tan’s story is an inspirational piece that has many different messages, she might be talking about language and difficulty of communication between her mom and her, and her mom and the rest of the public, but in goes further then this. Tan wants to show people that no matter what the situation was she was always able to communicate with her mom and that there is always an alternative that you never have to rest for the little things in life. Tan’s message was a powerful one which I understood as no matter what you want to achieve in life you will be able to achieve as long as you put your mind to it.
