“The Lady with the Dog” by Anton Chekhov is a short story to help people notice what was happening during those time periods. Comparing to today’s era, I would say most of it seems to be true. What started off as a simple vacation for Dmitri, trouble occurred when there was word spreading about a girl was had just arrived and seemed out of place and that was Anna. Within this time, women were not really respected as how they are respected now a days. Dmitri despised women and specifically said that he would drop them at any given time if he wanted to. Just from this, I can already tell that women were not given the respect that they deserve like in this generation that I am in. Women have been given more rights from the day the story was written till now. Of course, different countries have different laws, but everyone needed to have the idea of equality run across their mind to think twice before acting prematurely. Aside from women being looked down upon, this story helps us show how a possible affair could happen in real life. Now of course this does not happen instantly but after hanging out with each other, Dmitri realizes how cheerful he gets when Anna comes around to hand with him. Even thought they both knew they were both married, and tried to keep it friends only, that changes when they both confess they want to see each other halfway into the story when they both have to go back to their own country. From my point of view, after they both parted their ways, Dmitri seemed desperate to see her again, and once he finally gets to see her again, she finds him with her husband. Normally, this would be a no brainier to not interfere and let things go but Dmitri was determined to be with her even though that would involve both getting into an affair. No matter what current era it is, this is not morally right. An engagement is a trust between both partners to always be there for each other and to never betray one another and Dmitri is betraying his wife right now as he goes see’s Anna for the second time and tries to be with her at any given opportunity. At first Anna disapproves of the idea because she is with her husband on a small vacation in Yalta and if her husband gets any ideas, it will not end well. Now, I never want to agree on getting into an affair but there may only be one excuse and its love itself. If Dmitri knows Anna would be the one rather than his wife right now, there will not be anything stopping him. Now Dmitri would defeat the purpose of an engagement cause once that happens, you basically devote your life to that one special person who have acquired, not look for other females along the way like he did. Dmitri must always be careful now if he does not want his wife knowing that he will be seeing another female time to time after they had just met months ago in Yalta. In my opinion, Dmitri should not have gotten married in the first place knowing he is going to treat women with disrespect as I saw in the beginning of the story.
