What does it mean to serve your community?

Tutoring kids, writing for my local community radio, teaching the photography club, and visiting an old age home. That’s what my schedule looked like last year. When I was a senior in high school, towards the end of the year I had a lot of time on my hands. Instead of wasting my time, I decided to take advantage of it and serve my community. Teaching kids that want to learn, providing entertainment and news to others, visiting the elderly and putting a smile on their faces. As a Baruch Scholar, we receive free tuition, a laptop, early registration and a lot more. Since we are given great opportunities I feel it is important we give back to our community. This year my group and I decided to volunteer at a non profit organization, the Make A Wish Foundation. This foundation grants one wish to ill children. That becomes very life changing for the children and the people around them. It gives them something to look forward to and hope for. One sick girl wished to be an actress and the Make a Wish foundation had her star on their commercial. At times it may seem impossible to grant every wish, but with their hard work and dedication these volunteers do a great job turning dreams into reality. I am not positive about what my role in this volunteer project will be, but I am hoping it will be a life changing experience and that I will be a great help!

I applaud you for being so involved in your community, such as tutoring kids, writing for your local community radio as well as teaching photography. It seems like you are doing so many activities which is making your community a better place, especially volunteering for the Make-A-Wish foundation. The Make-A-Wish foundation is such a great organization helping young persons, who have a life threatening illness, wishes come true. More people, like you, should get involved with the organization because of the great impact the foundation has on these children. Knowing that the money one raises for the foundation brings hope back into the lives of others really is a life changing experience.
I, as well, am volunteering for the Make-A-Wish foundation with my entrepreneurial marketing group. Just like your group, we hope to help out the organization and grant a child’s wish so it can brighten up their spirits at such a tough time in their lives. We are getting our college community involved by holding events throughout the semester to raise money for the foundation. Some group members had already donated to the foundation, so we saw this as a perfect opportunity to help donate again.
I wish you and your team the best of luck with your volunteer project, and I hope that the both of us make a child’s wish come true.

Just like you, in high school I was really interested in contributing to my community. Even though my scheduling was full of extracurricular activities, I was also involved in the Big Brother Big Sister Program. I spent time with kids who did not have an older brother or sister to talk to and share stories with, and discuss growing up with someone besides their parents. However, once I got into college I didn’t seem to have the time to allocate to extracurricular activities or other community service, which was a big shame and I wish I had found the time. This semester I was determined to finally get back into helping out the community, and enrolling in our schools entrepreneurial class was the perfect opportunity. Just like you, the group which I am a part of for that class has selected Make-A-Wish as our charity of choice. I believe that there are not enough people raising awareness of this amazing cause. Our group’s main goals are not only to raise donations for the children in need but to also create awareness through-out our schools networks and beyond. We hope to achieve our goals through social events and other fundraiser/awareness events. Just like you said there is such a large amount of children who are in need of this foundation’s help, that there simple cannot be enough groups striving for the cause. I wish you all the luck to make this experience as great as it could be and hope you contributions help change a child’s life.
