Part II of Brainstorming; Structure Ideas

I revised my brainstorming ideas to these:

1)  Flip book (the one that is made to tell a story).

Structure:  glue at spine to hold the pages.

2)  Spiral notebook type of book,  journal-type of book.

3)  A book that has assignments after every chapter (not textbook format).

Structure:  Novel type book with glue at the spine to hold the pages.

4)  An instruction manual instructing others on how to change the oil in a car, for example.

Structure:  I would like to construct this book with stitching at the spine.

5)  An art-style book with what I have sketched in my free time. (These sketches would be copies of the original and have two on each page.)

Structure:  I would like this one to be a brochure that has an accordion type fold.

6) A fiction novel.

Structure:  Saddle-stitch with cover.

7)  A book with every page containing a word of inspiration for the days of the week.

Structure:  It would be a calendar and have a spiral running down the left side.  Most calendars have the spiral, if any, running across the top, but for this one I would like to see it done differently.

8)  A book with every page containing a bible verse for the days of the week.

Structure:  Very similar structure to the calendar but would have staples to hold the book together.

9)  A picture book of myself.

Structure:  The spine would be stapled.

10) A book of blog entries I have posted.

Structure:  saddle-stitch

11) A story book of my life since high school.

Structure:  yearbook type structure

12) A flip book with a pair of different eyes (my eyes from different stages of my life) on every page.

Structure:  Metal wire would hold the spine, but the difference with this one is such that it would not be a spiral.

13)  A book that describes who I am.

Structure:  similar to the fiction novel book structure. See #6.

14)  A book that describes the different tools needed to build a house.

15)  A book that describes the different tools needed to get through life.

Structure:  same structure as #16.

16)  A book that gives dating advice

Structure:  accordion fold and would be stood up on the table instead of held in your hand; picture book and no words to give dating advice.

17)  A book that gives career advice

Structure: accordion fold

18)  A book that gives job advice

Structure:  accordion fold

19)  A book that describes the Do’s and don’t s of personal style (example:  don’t copy what others are wearing, only use it to develop your own style)

Structure:  stapled spine.

20)  A book that has different foot prints on every page (differentiated from the S Book)

21)  Thread and needle of all my favorite magazine articles and/or newspaper articles.

22)  A book that has all the facial expressions of President Obama

Structure:  Saddle-stitch.

Printed Matter Assignment

Publication 1: Lost Between the Extensivity/Intensivity Exchange by Warren Neidich

This publication was very simple and fun to look at.  The pages inside had plain black font printed on 8”x 14” or legal size paper.  Alongside with the black font there were black and white photographs that completely illustrated the theme of the book.  One element of the publication that caught my attention was the hard cover.  The hard cover had hand-drawn art and was drawn with crayons and composed of tape and glue.

Publication 2: Group Work edited by Temporary Services

What I liked was that there was dialogue in the book.  It felt as though I was reading a fiction novel.  I like story telling in any publication that I read. Group Work is a soft-cover publication in which the cover is sketched out and possibly scanned into Photoshop.  I can tell that a lot of work has been put into it.  As far as the style is concerned, there are seven books glued at the margin and you cannot fully open the book 180 degrees, flat on the table.

Publication 3: Art on Paper by Melvin Edward Nelson; September/October 2009 Edition volume 14 no. 1

Art on Paper seems to be a comic book by the looks of the cover.  The cover has pink and black drawings on it and looks very animated.  When I opened the book, there were colorful pictures inside that were entertaining to look at.  The pictures were very detailed and fun.  Although the cover looks like a comic book, the inside was like a magazine and when I started reading, it was like reading a magazine.

Publication 4: Fierce Pussy

I want to make a point that the style of this publication is a nice one.  However, the title is a little offensive and the content of the publication is a little much.  But what was interesting is the biography-type style of the book.  The title is engaging to the audience and adds a level of mystery to the cover.  I became intrigued after I walked away from the book to see the reaction of others.  Observing others and their interaction with the book was interesting.  Also, I found it amusing to the reactions of others in the bookstore.  The facial expressions were priceless.  One woman who was examining the book after me made a face illustrating that she was intrigued by the language of the book.

Publication 5: S books by Ed Ruscha copyright 2001

This publication was simple but genius.  Every page has a different S on it.  The book is very small and easy to hold.  As I flipped through the pages, I got dizzy because there were a wide variety of colors.  I have not seen that many S’s in my life.  I like a book that makes me think about different designs to apply to one idea.  I would like to design a book like this one day.

Publication 6: Rock/Music Writings by Dan Graham

One awesome part about the publication was that it was dedicated to Roy Lichtenstein.  He seems important.  Another part that caught my attention was that there are 14 small books glued at the margin.  In the first 20 pages, the author plays with the typography such that he makes different designs with the words.  One example of this is that the word Love makes an upside down U.
