Portrait of the relationship between Stalin and Roosevelt is full of contradicted facts, that make it so colorful and mysterious.
- Were they equal partners or was there a dominant?
- Why would FDR be so pleasant with Russian dictator?
- Why so many decisions during the Tehran and Yalta conferences made in Stalin’s favor?
- Was Roosevelt manipulated by Stalin?
All those questions would have one explanation. Roosevelt and Stalin were equal partners with different goals. For Mr. President it was establishing United Nations in the postwar world, where for Mr. Stalin it was getting as much land as possible to explore the Communism. FDR was looking at the bigger picture, and he knew that in order for his plan to work the Big Three has to win in the WWI.
Based on their goals these two leaders had to find the way how to cooperate together. That’s why their partnership was so contradicted and it lead to the compromises that nobody would expect.
Susan Butler mentioned that for FDR was the first person who Stalin “had met since Lenin”, whom Stalin respected more than anybody, ” more powerful than him”. However, some of the historians disagree with her, by saying that Stalin was only using Roosevelt. Based on the research that I did, I can claim that the partnership was something that USA and USSR couldn’t avoid, because their interests were depended on each other. The whole world needed this partnership in order to win the Nazis.
If one of them failed to cooperate both of them loose. This is the base of the FDR and Stalin partnership.
In order to establish price of relationship for FDR and Stalin I need to explain 4 main points:
- WWII, general reasons for cooperation between USSR & USA or Beginning of relationship
- What did Stalin’s get in this partnership – more land, more power
- What did Roosevelt’s get in this partnership – United Nations
- How did the break up happen between the USSR and USA
