“Presents” during Tehran Conference:
Eastern Part of Poland
Stalin was claiming that the same part of Poland that was mentioned in the Pact Molotov-Ribbentrop (USSR signed in 1939 a secret pact with Germans), should go to USSR as a after the WWII would be over. According to Geopolitics, USA wouldn’t be able to keep that land, because it was too far to control and too expensive to eliminate the damages that Poland had to face after German invasion. But to keep the balance it was important for FDR demand something in return for this “present”. However, Roosevelt didn’t do it, in contrast he was the first one who brought up this question during the Tehran Conference and confirmed that he supports Stalin’s requirements implicitly.
Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia
President Roosevelt also allowed Stalin to annex Baltic countries: Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, also without any demands in exchange. Roosevelt didn’t want to listen to anybody, even to his partner Churchil, who claimed that obviously USSR wouldn’t let this land go away, but they should at least force Stalin to pay for it somehow.
All those “presents” during the Tehran was a price for Mr. President, that he didn’t mind to pay, in order to get Stalin’s support and trust. FDR believed that if he would treat him nice, by following all his requirements, Stalin would be on his side.
Churchill has no choice, but to follow Mr. President.
“Presents” during Yalta Conference:
Roosevelt confirmed that non of the “presents”, that were given to Stalin during the Tehran, wouldn’t be taken away after the WWII is over.
Roosevelt also confirmed to Stalin that the temporary government that was establish in Poland wouldn’t be supported by USA, which meant that they had no choice to survive. The reason why Mr. President confirmed it was, the danger of the temporary government to the USSR Communist policies. Stalin needed communist to be in Poland in order to control this country, otherwise he wouldn’t be able to manipulate Poland government and attach this country later on to the USSR. Roosevelt clearly understood this danger. This support was one more step towards the Stalin’s support.
At least these and Stalin got because of his promise to Mr. President to join him after the WWII in the War with Japan.
Here is an overacted example of how did the conversation go in Tehran and Yalta.
As a conclusion, Stalin during the conferences in Yalta and Tehran satisfy all his requirements, by getting as much land as possible, without making a little sacrifices.
According to University of Missouri Press: “All that Roosevelt wanted was to keep the US out of the European power politics and to delegate authority instead to a surrogate international order – the United Nations.” FDR believed that if he would be able to please Stalin by giving him all these presents now, he would support his plan of establishing the United Nations later. When this goal would be achieved none of the country would have an opportunity to became to powerful, because it would be the main task for United Nations – to keep power under control.
