For my language narrative, the primary audience should be Middle Eastern people and anyone who has been thinking about improving themselves in this society. I used allusions in my writing to give the audience a visual understanding of my perspective on self-improvement and sports. Meaningful insights that I’ve learned from this phase is understanding the effects society has on different cultures and how it shapes our future. Reading Amy Tan and understanding her background and the difficulties she had dealt with alongside her mother growing up impacted me the most. Her purpose of creating a piece to question why Asian Americans aren’t in the creative writing programs inspired my work of questioning why Middle Easterns don’t try to play American sports. Her writing made me understand that I need more context in my writing so the audience/reader gets more of a visual of the message that I am trying to provide in my work.
Now when reading to analyze writing, I feel that I am more suffocated in understanding what the writer’s points and the message are and understanding the visual concept they are trying to give us with the context they provide in their writing. Also as I stated before I feel like it’s easier for me to adapt my writing style using word choices, and content to fully grasp my audience in the piece that I am writing so they can the context better. Before, I used to get straight to the point and this would leave my writing pieces blank, with holes in them to fill. I would get from point a to point b but I wouldn’t really provide content on the journey from point a to point b, however, I feel like after reading Amy Tan’s writing piece and much more. I am more prepared to tell my story and share the context of the journey from point a to point b with the audience feeling more connected to my writing and having feelings/thoughts on what the message I am trying to send in my writing is. Connecting the resources I read to real-life experience is something that I knew I could do but after writing this piece during the semester I feel like I was able to become better in a sense at it.
For this Rhetorical Analysis, I spoke about the movie/book American Psycho and the main character Patrick Bateman. I decided to tailor my audience to anyone who enjoys watching movies, or anyone who has watched/read the American Psycho movie or book and give a full analysis on why they made the decision they did with Patrick Bateman. Something meaningful that I gained from this phase is when I’m reading or watching something to analyze the details
given more as they can mean much more than they show off. I had realize why they decided to do things such as make his apartment fully white to show off his emotions and etc. I think the concepts that most impacted my writing for the phase was looking at the purposes and why the director and author decided to incorporate such small details that could tell a whole perspective of a character in the end.
This phase assignment helped me develop my understanding to engage with another person’s description of the movie and how it differed from mine or was similar to mine. Like I said earlier it also helped me toward analyzing the smaller details because from what I’ve learned doing this assignment was that the small details that the author or director show/tell you, can mean a lot more to a character than you think. Another thing that this assignment helped me with is completing the process, not only did I rewatch the movie to get a better understanding of the movie and the character. I went along and read bits and pieces of the book that gave a description of something that the movie didn’t have in it/ I read a summary of the movie itself to understand another person perspective on the movie. I enjoyed trying something new and getting out of my comfort zone to enjoy the process of doing this assignment.
I chose to talk about PTSD for my research paper, my audience for this paper really is anyone because I’m trying to spread awareness of a mental and physical disorder that really isn’t looked open as much as it should be in today’s society. I feel like in my writing I did use both a lot of emotion and logic so I did end up using majority logos and pathos (which is something that I connected alot with during the semester) Some meaningful things that I’ve learned from this are how little awareness there is for PTSD in the United States, you never really see ads on TV about it or it being pushed by the media.
This phase helped me a lot with gaining the knowledge to research something if I need to, look up data and facts more efficiently, and helped me make better connections to research and multimedia. Something that I learned that I’m going to continue to grow on is finding the right quotes to use for my audience to gain knowledge on the subject that I am researching, it did take me a while to get the right quote that I wanted so that I could commentate thoughts on the quote. I learned how to identify with creditable sources and engage with data/stats to use in my research paper. I also had to read and analyze the texts that I used like I said before to understand the quotes that I was going to use so that I could make comments on it afterward.
Overall, throughout the semester I feel like having these different types of assignments such as having to do a rhetorical analysis to a research paper helped me all in different ways as stated before, I’m very happy that I was able to learn alot as a writer and find myself loving to do these assignments because at points during my learning career I dreaded writing essays, I appreciated all the feedback given to me throughout the semester and I hope to continue to grow from what I’ve learned while doing these essays.
Over the course of I’ve been writing for class and I feel like I’ve slowly improved on my writing while taking this class and began becoming a more fluent and creative writer in the process. Having the option of choosing what you want to write about I feel is necessary if you want the best from a writer because they’ll show their best on something that they are passionate about.
