In my junior year of high school, I was assigned with the task of writing a 25 page paper on the effecta of technology on Western civilization. It’s only fitting that in my junior year of college, i’m assigned with the task of writing about the same thing. This was far more interesting though.
Marshall McLuhan makes a great point when he talks about the fact that Media and Technology has changed practically everything about socitey, in both good and bad ways. While the pros and cons of media and technology may be pretty obivous, McLuhan pushes past conventional thoughts about media and technology’s influence on Western civilization, and further enhances it. He does this by mentioning the technology we use today are mere “extensions” of our own senses, rather than a means to an end. When I read this, I realized the rather large fallacy in that god-awful paper of mine. Media and technology is meant to enhance our existence, not control it. Needless to say, I kind of agree with McLuhan. I looked at his examples and after giving it much thought, I realized that the internet could simply be an extension of the mind or brain. Take Google for example, because of its capabilities, we can now just type whatever thought (whether or not it is logical) into the search engine, and we can find an article about it. Imagine where the world would be if we all thought this way.
