After reading, “Digital Technology as a Tool” I gained a better insight into how the digital art movement got its start and how people were able to express themselves through that medium. I really enjoyed reading about the many artists that were mentioned, but the one that stuck out to me the most was Nancy Burson.

Nancy Burson’s work was very interesting to me. Her most famous work was called “Beauty Composites” which layered various different faces of celebrities on top of each other in order to create a new face. Burson’s work addressed the standard notions of beauty in America and even challenged them. Beauty Composites became a testament to human ideals of beauty, and observed the similarities as well as the stark differences between people. Her development contributed to a style of art called “morphing”, which is even used today as a way to identify missing persons and potential suspects and criminals. I did some further research on Burson and she also created the Human Race Machine, which enabled people to see themselves as an ethnicity completely opposite from their own. The fact that Burson’s work has influenced society in this way is really cool.
