How Excel is used at work

I have two instances of working with excel that I’d like to share with everyone. First, while I was interning at UBS Financial Services for a Wealth Management group I spent a lot of time working with excel spreadsheets for assignments ranging from creating model portfolios to organizing mutual funds. The experience really opened my eyes to how useful Excel really is and how vital it is to beĀ proficientĀ in Excel.

Prior to that, and actually to this day, I work as a bookkeeper for a nutrition company where I use several different programs including excel. Though excel is not the most major part of the job, without sufficient understanding of manipulating spreadsheets I would not be able to complete my work on time and that’s never good.

I am currently working part time under the OSSD dept (Office for Services with Students with Disabilities) here at Baruch College. I am contracted to work as a liaison for a specialized project entitled Click and Go. What exactly is Click and Go? Click and Go are narrative maps that help the disable population navigate to and from specific locations. One might ask themselves what exactly makes Click and Go a specialized project? My duties include gathering data within our disability population here at Baruch. (which currently includes over 350 students.) If I were to provide a simplified definition of Click and Go I would state that it is very similar a combination of Hop Stop, Yahoo directions and Google Maps. I am looking to understand and get a better grasp on using specific formulas that will ultimately help simplify my job.

Another question one might ask themselves is how does all work? I gather all the pertinent information that is collected from dozens of excel spreadsheets and help create specialized routes; for example how would you give directions to a wheelchair bound student have access to the 17 Lexington building to attend a Chemistry class? or assist a visually impaired student from the Vertical Campus building to the Bursars office? I am hoping eventually all of my hard work will be posted on Baruch’s website that will work towards serving the betterment of ALL Baruch students.

I am employed as an Admissions Processing Assistant at Baruch College. I use excel mainly to keep track of students but in different capacities. For example, the Undergraduate Admissions Office uses an excel share drive for us to keep track of admissions applications, denials and appeals. We keep lists of what students are invited to attend orientations and when. One of the most important things excel helps us to do is run programs to update student records so that we do not have to do it manually, which is very helpful when dealing with thousands of applicants at a time. The excel share drive allows us to share information on current and perspective students in a secure way, when in the past we may have had to use emails or other forms of info sharing which were less private.
