Extra Credit 2) Technology to Improve Life

What interests me the most about technology around the world is the internet itself. When you take a moment to actually think about what the internet can do it never ceases to blow my mind. Here we are sitting in front of this glowing box that can do almost anything. The information available is incredible and it’s hard to believe that society functioned without it. It has made everyday life so much easier in so many ways. The idea of Google is almost unbelievable. You sit down and don’t know a topic, so you Google it and seconds later you are now an expert. It amazes me that all of this information is on the internet. In addition to the information, we are all connected. On the internet you can contact people all over the world, stay in touch with relatives, or make new friends. Shopping, banking, research and millions of other things are now at the palm of your hand. The internet has opened a world of possibilities and I think we take for granted to often how much information we really have. I think the internet, needless to say, is amazing and I can’t imagine how difficult checking the weather, checking sports scores, watching movies, or writing papers would be without it. The internet has improved the overall quality of life for people throughout the world.

Extra Credit 1) Your Digital Legacy: States Grapple with Protecting Our Data After We Die

Should executors be allowed access to a deceased persons’ email and Facebook accounts?

Yes, I believe that people should have access to a deceased persons’ email and Facebook accounts. I think that in this situation the person that should be given the access to these accounts should be the same person who is given all of the deceased person’s material assets. So if a mother dies and the daughter is given the mothers estate, the access to the mother’s digital information should also be given to the daughter as well. As the article mentioned, people used to lock things up with a lock and key but now it’s with passwords over the internet. So the same way that someone is given access to a deceased persons safe deposit box after they die, that person should be given their digital information as well. Maybe a way to settle this problem would be if people were advised to specify their requests in a will. Much like people will their property or material assets to people when they die, maybe people would want to do the same with digital info. Also if a person is against giving up their digital information after they die maybe their information can be deleted for them as per their requests in their will. This is a very gray area in the law but in my opinion digital information that is password protected on the internet should be handled the same way that a locked safe of a deceased person is handled.

Why would technology companies like Google be opposed to laws that allow other people to access a user’s account after that person dies?

I think a company like Google would be opposed to this because I think it makes them look bad. People are very paranoid that their information is too accessible on the internet, and if new laws are implemented that may force Google to give the information of the deceased it might scare people away. If people know that when they die their digital information will be released, it might freak them out. They will think that their privacy only lasts as long as they are alive. Now some people might not mind that idea but I think it would bother other people knowing that their information may be in the wrong hands. So, to sum it up I think this would hurt Google’s reputation and it would prove the paranoia that all your info is indeed saved and these big companies can assess, and use, that information very easily without your consent.

How people use Access

Very simply, Microsoft Access is an information management tool that helps you store information for reference, reporting, and analysis.  Microsoft Access can help you overcome the limitations found when trying to manage large amounts of information in Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet applications.

The value any database can provide is to store related information in one place, and then let you connect various different things together (sometimes called “entities” in database speak).  You store one version of the truth for any given thing, like a client, a DVD, or an order.  Some of the major benefits to using a database are:
  1. Fewer errors and inconsistencies.  Maintaining one version of the truth for the things you need to track minimizes the potential for duplication, errors, and inconsistent values.  In the Excel example above, customer names, contact phone numbers, and product names are misspelled, transposed, and abbreviated in different forms.  Imagine trying to create a report or graph in Excel that shows an accurate picture of your sales or other key performance indicators.
  2. Higher productivity. You and others working in your database need only change a single record and all other related things in your database will automatically “see” the change.   In our Excel example, you would need to change every occurrence of a customer’s name.  Find and replace wouldn’t necessarily catch that a customer’s name is spelled six different ways.  In a database, there is only one customer record to change.  Every other record (orders, contacts, etc) that relates to that customer record will never need to change because they are joined to the customer.

Microsoft Access works in the same manner any database does, by storing related information together, and letting you create connections (commonly called relationships) between different things.  The relationships between two different things in MSAccess can be very simple (such as a contact at a customer and the customer itself) or complex.  In the example below, the blue boxes represent the major things we’re tracking in our MS Access database tables, and the reports at right show how you can join the related information for analysis and reporting.

How some people use Excel at work

“Microsoft Excel is known for  its spreadsheet capabilities. However, Excel is capable of more than simply  accounting functions. Excel can also help users with statistical, engineering  and higher math calculations. The software can also use that information to  create charts and graphs that can make analysis more effective.”

“Excel can hold and manage large amounts of data; at least 65,000 rows. Cells can  be formatted and highlighted to show results that are outside of the stated  targets. Users can adjust the data to find out what happens to the final result  if input factors are changed. What-if analysis is used to test various scenarios  to reach the desired goals.”
