Just a thought….

Hirschmann stated “It’s really about opening the doorway to the world of technology and understanding what it is. It’s about giving people just enough, and making it easy enough…”

I definitely agree with this quote because with the advance technology, everything is simple and much easier to operate. It only takes one click and every thing you need to know is available to you.

Technology in Bangladesh

Since the country I come from, Bangladesh is a relatively new country; there are many ways technology is being implemented. Government is specially taking several steps to expose citizens to technology. One program of the government accepts online application for people that want to work outside the country. This way, foreign employers are able to look for individuals of their choice and getting rid of the middlemen who are know for malpractice. Any workers that happen get the employment, they are given smartcards which hold all their information. This card is very similar to the green cards that immigrants get in the US. There are also efforts by companies to make cellphones more affordable. One of company’s first innovations was the Village Phone scheme, established at a time when a mobile handset still cost $1000. This program implemented micro credit in order to make the phone more affordable. BillPay is another program that allows people to pay utility bills over the phone. There are also hotlines where farmers can call in order to clarify any concerns pertaining agriculture.

How people from Dominican Republic are using technology to improve their lives

Technology has definitely improved the quality of our lives. In Dominican Republic, the technological advances has helped people to get their work done faster at the workplace. For instance, the records of birth certificates will be kept in books at the “Oficina Civil” which is the place where a new born child’s information is declared. Over the years these books would deteriorate causing the information to be lost. However, individual’s personal information is now saved on computers. This has become an advantage because the data is safer on computers than it is in books. In addition, it doesn’t consume a lot of time finding someone’s information in the system compared to the hard search that had to be done before.

SoftBank buying 70% stake in Sprint

The deal with Sprint Nextel to sell a majority of the company to Japanese tech giant SoftBank will affect affect their subscribers in many way. They will now have to await the new changes of the company and make changes to their contracted services. There will be a change in phone prices because sprint will now have phones that are 4G that both At&t and Verizon their biggest competitors already have.AT&T and Verizon should now be worried because Sprint will now have the same products and services available which made them bigger and better providers in the past. There will be a lot more competition and now they will have to work harder at marketing to keep their customers and still get new ones.

“These Are the 25 Worst Passwords of 2012”- This is the article I have chosen to write about

http://techland.time.com/2012/10/25/these-are-the-25-worst-passwords-of-2012/?hpt=hp_t3

The discussions questions from the article:

  • What tips does the CEO of SplashData give for creating a unique password?

Slain, the CEO from SplashData, suggests to use “passphrases” when creating unique passwords. The reason for this is because “passphrases” are easier to remember and at the same time more difficult to be guessed by others. For instance, the phrase “I can’t sleep without my teddy bear” could be simplified to “IcswmtB”. In addition, strong passwords require some numbers, punctuation marks, and upper case letter so my new “passphrase” ends up being ” I.cswmtb86 ” .

  • Why are passwords important?

Password are extremely important because they ensure that our information is kept secured from many sites. Since today most transactions are made over the internet, an stolen password can endanger your financial an personal data. For example, if someone steals my password to access to my Amazon’s account and this website have my debit card number saved whoever gets access to it can make purchases using my money without my notice. Also, transfer of funds can be made from my bank account to others if a perpetrator breaks my password. The simplest thing that can result from a stolen password is just embarrassment of details changed in your account from sites like Facebook. Even though you can always go back and create a new Facebook account if it has been hacked, but nobody wants to go over the process of letting friends, classmates, coworkers, and family know that the messages they are receiving is not actually from you. This is why I strongly advice all of you to start using “passphrases” and secure yourselves from perpetrators who are just waiting to get lazy people using passwords like “12345678” and do harm to them.

The background and how technology is being used in Hong Kong

I came from Hong Kong, which is one of the most internationalized cities in People’s Republic of China. Under One Country Two Systems, Hong Kong has its own government and political rights to protect the economy development. The Hong Kong currency pegged to the US currency, so if there is a US company lists in the Hong Kong stock market, they can take a lot of advantages from the Asian investors as when they are using the Hong Kong currency to trade during the transactions, they are bring benefits to the US currency rate at the same time. So the Internet and IT technology is very important to the economic development in Hong Kong. Tokyo is a very huge city, but their city has Wi-Fi network covered almost everywhere. The Japan government understood if every person can access to the Internet whenever they want, there is a huge amount of potential benefit to Japan as people in Tokyo has the second largest stock market in Asia. Hong Kong is a very small city, and the Hong Kong government understands that Tokyo is the best model as the possibility to have Wi-Fi covered everywhere in Hong Kong is even higher than Tokyo and the Hong Kong stock market has the largest turnover rate throughout all the other stock markets in the world. The internet networking is Hong Kong is now very well developed, there is mobile Wi-Fi network on every single bus, train, subway stations, convenience store, supermarket, school, university, fast food restaurant, etc.

Hong Kong was a British colony, and it is the largest melting pot of Chinese and Western cultures in Asia. Hong Kong has mixed of Chinese and Western traits in a culture of life. Along with the United Kingdom restored Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China in 1997, general public is easier access to Western culture than any other Asia cities. Culture of Hong Kong and the Mainland China, the increasingly frequent exchange of trade, and culture exchanges between Hong Kong and the Mainland netizens are also gradually increasing. The Internet absorbed Western culture, and also learned China’s Internet culture, would then form a unique Hong Kong-style Internet culture. Meanwhile, due to the huge amount of international trade in Hong Kong, it is very important for the government and people to make the right business decisions, so people in Hong Kong have a necessity to receive all the instant news around the world. As early as in 1990, the Hong Kong Internet Service Provider (ISP) was already providing Internet access service, but the service was extremely expensive, only government and large commercial organizations could afford it. The wire constraints were very expensive and the Internet speed was very slow at that time, so the coverage was not high. Hong Kong’s Internet was failed to proliferate, it leaded to extremely slow culture development. In 1995, the Internet was growing popularity of a large extent due to lower price computers, as well as ISP Internet coverage to more areas. The development and progress of science and technology was doing very well in Hong Kong, so that the ISP could provide services to a diversified manner, and the network gradually began to integrate into public life. Since 1999, ISP began offering broadband services. The bandwidth had been greatly upgraded, so the Internet users use much shorter time to receive information from the Internet than in the past. Internet users were able to receive more diversified news. Therefore, different forms of economic activities began to appear, the Hong Kong Internet network became highly commercialized.
