By having more of our lives online, will our daily lives become more visible to outsiders on the internet?

Yes, I think so, by using more time on the internet we are exposing ourselves to the outsiders on the internet. So I think that the less time you spend on the internet the better is. There is no need to communicate all the time and from different sources.

GoPro Camera

GoPro is a brand of the privately owned San Mateo, California company that features “wearable” camera such as helmet cameras that are targeted at adventure video/photography. This type of camera is widely used by professionals and hobbyists. GoPro cameras have been used to film inside of the mouths of alligators, sharks, and polar bears. It’s just incredible what we have accomplished with technology.
First of all, this type of cameras allows us to learn and understand more of the animal world. In a scientific expedition, a biologist put a GoPro HE Hero3 on a shark’s fin for three weeks, which allowed the scientific people to track the shark, analyze his habitat, food, interaction with other animals in the ocean. There are so many things that people can use with the GoPro camera. I highly recommend to go to www.youtube.com and type GoPro, you will find so many awesome videos. Enjoy it!

extra credit assignment is worth towards your final exam grade

The average American college student takes their education for granted. Yes, they spend countless hours attending classes, reviewing notes, and studying for exams. Majority of the time they do this with the ending result in mind, which is an A in the class which leads to an amazing GPA, and graduating from an institute of education, with the idea they will receive an amazing job and will be set for life. This is not the way to think while attending an institute of education. Students should hold more focus on learning the material and applying it, so it is stored in their forever kept with them.

Firstly, I personally don’t like to waste my time, if I’m attending a class I want to learn and get lost in the material and fall in love with it.  Students today hardly have these thoughts in their mind. They are too busy trying to get the A even if it means taking drugs, cheating, or finding a dishonest way to obtain the grade.  These students take their education for granted, many young people around the world are unable to attend school and learn subjects of their interest. Young people in other parts of the world are faced with war, poverty, or uncompromising circumstance that do not allow them to receive a quarter of the educational opportunity Americans do.

The idea of distance learning is something that has been in the midst of development for many years. It has gone through many tests of trial and error. Televised lessons have seemed to be very beneficial and cost effective for the underdeveloped countries. Without internet access many countries rely on the televised lessons. If there isn’t access to the internet or television, they have access to the radio. The radio provides some key information to make them more literate in certain subjects, this isn’t the most efficient way of learning but for some it’s there only option.

Technology has changed things for many people who are not given the opportunity as easily as we are, it has allowed the classroom to come to the seeking scholar no matter how far the geographical gap may seem. The internet provides online classes, such as the courses MIT offers. Not only can one learn but one can receive what is to be considered a grade A education by one of the top schools.

Although studies have shown that it is difficult for many to receive the available information on the internet due to the infrastructure of some countries. People know it’s there, and if they want it bad enough they will obtain whatever knowledge they are looking for. Years ago this would have stayed a dream for many but the simple fact that it can be accessible is enough for the seeking mind that is willing to overcome obstacles. Yes, the poor girl in the village probably doesn’t have the same facets of learning as the upper class girl who lives in the city, but technology in existence is bringing the gap closer together.  The information is out there it, but it is up to the person to find it, and it may not be easy but today nothing is impossible due to technology.

An interesting article that argues that the distance learning is not effective can be found here: http://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/viewArticle/477/1012

I mention this article because although it argues the effectiveness of distance learning, I feel that it contains a few key points that highlight  the simple fact that the information is there and reachable due to the advances we have today that we didn’t have decades ago. Which makes me happy to know that although us Americans take our education for granted, people who would appreciate a learning experience have the opportunity to seek and obtain.

How Technology is being used in Brazil- Extra Credit

I found a very interesting way Brazil has been using Global Positioning Satellites according to Rocky Mountain Tracking. GPS has revolutionized how we drive, walk, move, search and work. GPS works by a MEO satellite that tracks the movement of a device. In Vitoria Da Conquista, Brazil, they have put about 43,000 GPS devices in school uniforms. This is an ingenious method of tracking the whereabouts of the students who may be exposed to hostile territories or just making sure they are attending their classes. How does the t-shirt work? These so-called “intelligent uniforms” have embedded radio frequency chips which sends a text message to their parents’ cell phones as soon as the student enters the building. If their child hasn’t shown up for school 20 minutes into the morning, a text is sent stating “Your child has still not arrived at school.” The t-shirts can be washed without fear of damage to the chip, which also features a security system that makes tampering virtually impossible. As a fellow Brazilian, I’m glad that they are putting so much care into education and safety of Brazil’s future.

Extra Credit: SoftBank buying 70% stake in Sprint

1)What does this mean for Sprint subscribers?
Firstly, this would mean that there still would be a Sprint to subscribe to. The other concern would be the interests of Softbank, a Japanese company and whether this would affect American customers such as pricing plans or changes in billing. Due to this influx of cash, this could be a further expansion of Sprint leading it to become a larger competitive force in the industry, things such as LTE coverage or signal is one such example.

2)Should AT&T and Verizon be concerned about Sprint’s new global partner?
Yes, as this deal will give Sprint a larger boost in the market, other companies will need to ensure they remain competitive. They need to differentiate themselves from Sprint either through better service or lower prices. Although it is bad for other companies as it bites into their profits, customers have more variety to choose from and prevents a monopoly from taking hold.

Extra Credit Assignment: What is the ‘Internet of things?’

By having more of our lives online, will our daily lives become more visible to outsiders on the internet?

Facebook, twitter and instagram, are just some of the social utilities people use to share their lives with friends, families and if they don’t have their settings set to private, also share their lives with the world.  When people use these platforms to post status updates of the time they woke up or that they just had a cup of coffee, where they are going or went,  followed by photos of their lives they are becoming more visible to outsiders on the internet. Privacy settings give us a false sense of security as if we are only visible to those friends and family we allow on our list. However, these privacy settings change all the time and what if someone sitting at a desk at Facebook headquarters is bored and decides to snoop and look at profiles. People have control of what they post, that is about the only control people have,  and if they are smart they will be very cautious. If you wake up one day and decide to become a more private person after being open on the worldwide web is very difficult to delete all those embarrassing things. It may go away from your page but who is to say someone didn’t save that embarrassing photo and sent it to someone or that your picture which you forgot to set as private is not in a website in another country. Some people also post every single aspect of their lives online, about their home life, they job or school and their social life outside of wok. Some are overexposed and I feel as if I know their whole lives. To me is a learning experience of what not to do.

How do we prevent outsiders from viewing and tracking even the smallest details of our lives?

Privacy settings change all the time and often times we are given a small window to change them to prevent our information from being accessed by the public. Technical glitches happen as well and there are thousands of hackers. If you only trust a few people with your most embarrassing photos and the daily routine of your life then maybe you should consider not posting it online because it may turn up somewhere you don’t want. Perhaps you can text or call your close friends with what you are doing and not post it on Facebook.  At the end of the day it depends on the person you are, if you are social, have a lot of friends and the information you post is harmless then using social media is for you. However, if you are a private person that only uses social media as a platform to express views and not about displaying your personal life then you  may want to keep it that way.

Extra Credit: How Technology is used in China

China has been a major economic player in the world economy yet it is not known for its technological prowess in modern times. However, it has been playing catchup with the rest of the world. They have been adopting many technologies from other countries implementing them, with one example being the magnet trains which has provided faster transportation and made available for use. Although there have been positive benefits to having technology improved in areas, there have been negative effects due to how it is handled. One major example of this is the censorship of the internet where the government has banned information access on what they view to be harmful. This essentially slows down progress in areas such as information ethics. So technology in China can go both ways, it can be for the betterment of its society
or not.

Extra Credit: Windows 8 vs. Windows RT: It matters. Let’s explain.

Rahmina Begum

  •  How will Windows 8 change the way that users interact with their devices?
The Windows 8 pitch for its launch at Staples was, “With Windows 8, Windows has been re-imagined. It is the best of both worlds, the best devices for work and play.” It could not get any clearer than this. Windows 8 has four main pillars; it’s Start Screen that is in the form of a digital bulletin board with live tiles, amazing apps, cloud storage on the Skydrive and capacity of productivity of both work and play. Windows 8 works best and “comes to life” provided users have two things; 1. a Microsoft account and 2. a touch screen device. Windows 8 can be used with any Windows 7 device and without a Microsoft account, but in my opinion, users would not get the full experience out of it without the touch screen and being connected. In short, with Windows 8, users would be able to use a full operating system (or, an abbreviated OS if using Windows 8 RT) on a touch screen, and with Cloud connect. The touch should make life alot easier for smartphone users because the gestures will come intuitively. Like the video mentions there is a learning curve for Windows 8 but, like with any pioneering devices and technologies, once users play around with it for a while and get acquainted, sales should take off.

  • What is a Start app?

A Start App is an app on the new Start Screen of Windows 8. It can be a shortcut to Microsoft Office, a Contacts app, the Messaging service, or one of the other several apps the Microsoft offers. These apps, in the form of tiles, are customizable and may be rearranged, regrouped, renamed, and set to be “live” and update in real time.

Extra Credit: Thoughts on WileyPLUS (resubmitted)

WileyPLUS sounded like a great idea, essentially a timesaver tool to make the course material more accessible and the course more convenient. It does have its drawbacks though. The online textbook has been helpful in that I didn’t have to carry the book to class for lab, because we could look at it while doing lab online. However about not being able to access it on the train, was a true drawback. The point of having an online textbook is so that we can access it without having to carry the heavy print book. Having the option to download the online book would have been nice, so that we can have it saved for access on our laptops, smartphones or tablets while underground.

This was my first semester balancing a 35-hour work schedule with a full time student schedule, and I barely had time to breathe throughout. I do most of my studying on the train when I can actually take out the textbook if the train is not too crowded. This isn’t ideal but I am definitely planning on making things a bit more manageable for myself in the future. It was a good lesson to learn.
Bottom line, the online textbook was somewhat helpful. I feel I may have done exactly the same in the course with only the print book. As for the quizzes, they were also somewhat helpful. I found the wording and material choice of the quizzes a little difficult to comprehend, and this is reflected in my grades, but they were overall better than nothing. What was most annoying about them was not being able to edit a submitted answer. We didn’t get the grades for the quizzes immediately so I think in all fairness we should have been able to change answers if we wanted to before the submission time. For pros, the quizzes definitely let me take a look at the material before the class, so that’s good.
