Technology in my country

In my country technology is progressing day by day. Seven years ago when I came to USA nothing was new for me. In my country we had almost all the things related to technology for example: laptops, computers, mobile and internet, i short everything related to technology. But one of the biggest daw back is that  technology is very expensive. Everyone cannot afford it. Having technology is considered like a living status. Students are taught about the technology people are very aware of it and are very smart to understand and use technology. Nowadays many American companies are hiring people from country to implement new technologies and softwares. My husband is an example for me. He is an IT consultant and did his studies in my country. In short, in my country people are lack of  sources and facilities but still they have knowledge equal to a developed country having a lot of sources and facilities.

How Technology impacted Ecuador By Stalyn Orellana

When I first came here to the United States it was kind of hard to comunicate back to Ecuador. Phone calls were the only way to comunicate, for a 5 dollars card you could talk for about 15 minutes, which wasn’t a long time but we really had no other choice. A few years back I decided to  try out MSN messaging when it first offered the feature to do face to face chat, and It was very cool to be able to see the other person right on the screen. Now days with facechat and skype you can have a face to face conversation as long as you have an internet connection it’s all good. This has helped my family stay in touch and to stay in each other lifes.

It’s definately nice to know that you can get a hold of anybody in just a matter of seconds, even if that person is thousands of miles away lol. ; )

Cameras for adrenaline junkies go mainstream By Stalyn Orellana

Having experience using the GoPro Camera, I can safely say that this is one of the best inventions for people like me, who like to get out there and do crazy things like; drive race cars, ride motorcycles, Bmx ride, Snowboard,  Jetsky and that’s just to name a few of the sports that I have been involved in. I’m pleased to say that 1 camera has held up to the torture that I put it through every time I go looking for adventures, with the water resistant and shock resistant cover, GoPro offers a killer deal, making it easy to capture those unique moments. In fact they have sent cameras out to space and as they fell back down to earth they recorded the whole process…

I’m very glad that products like this exist because I couldnt imagine mounting a 5 pound camera on my helmet  when I go snowboarding…

Technology in Greece

While analog computers were originally invented in Greece it is still possible to find towns without Wi-Fi access; even at this time some places in Greece only have dial up connectivity. It wasn’t until after the millennial that most islands within Greece was able to have Wi-Fi acces. Often at a high cost internet connection left most paying for international rates and high additional surcharges.  In addition when traveling outside of the United States it is important to remember to bring along the right adapter for your phone and or laptops; here in the states we work on 110v in Greece its 220v.

Throughout history Greeks have improved technology. Designed and constructed by the Greece are things each of us use daily, for example air and water pumped used in shower-baths, alarm clocks. Moreover the Greeks used technology to invent the telescope,  lighthouses, fire hoses, automatic doors, vending machines and used engineering to help open the Suez Canal.

Our Web freedom at the mercy of tech giants

It is important mention that as we all will become Baruch graduates and the next generations of managers we have spent a great deal of our lives online. A major portion of our communication has occurred through instant messaging, texting and social networking sites. Devices becoming both smaller & quicker have changed the current trend of technology. These innovations will bring with them new questions. Technology has changed the workplace setting beyond recognition and many of our previous assumptions about monitoring and freedom will have to be renegotiated; much like our phones the old answers that’s need to be upgraded privacy laws concerning the internet also need to be upgrade. DEFINITIONS ARE IMPORTANT one must ask what do these significant actually mean?

According to the Journal of Business Communication INFORMATION PRIVACY deals with one’s ability to control access to one’s own personal information  while COMMUNICATION PRIVACY deals with one’s ability to control WHO can access the content of one’s communication. Author of Privacy & American BusinessAlan Westin – defines information privacy as “the claim of individuals, groups, or institutions to determine for THEMSELVES when, how, and to what extend information about them is communicated to others.”

While we can all agree that an invasion of privacy is accessing someone’s private account without their permission; we also need to remember the American Civil Liberties Union statement, “The things we do and say online leave behind ever-growing trails of personal information. With every click, we entrust our conversations, emails, photos, location information and much more to companies.” Floodgates of litigations have exceedingly risen based on the extend of business relations and electronic correspondences especially since NO ONE OWNS THE INTERNET– boundaries become blurred.

With the internet population has steadily doubled within the past five years more of our personal information is online since most corporations view lack of monitoring (whether that be through keystrokes, capturing screen shots, voicemail and web retrieval) as “costly in terms of lost business opportunities. Employees are not given the option to OPT OUT- they are unable to choose whether they would like to be monitored or not, instead there is a CONTRACT ASPECT that needs to be address. In order for monitoring to be legal and for companies to enforce web monitoring we sign agreements waiving our privacy (NOT SIGNING THE AGREEMENT MEANS NOT GETTING THE JOB)

Definitions of Privacy, Contracts & the Global Aspect are important because lines become unclear & it’s up each one of us to change the workplace setting and renegotiate these definitions and create new guidelines. Bottom line is simple, if you don’t want your information to be viewed keep it under a private status or more importantly learning how to self-regulate what we choose to disclose is key. Another preventative measure we might look to is when writing anything that will be posted online – write as if your boss will be reading your email (because as it stands now he probably is)

Fingerprint biomedics in Brazil’s banking ATMs

Back in June of this year, it was announced that 3500 fingerprint biomedics ATMs would be installed in one of the largest banks in Brazil.

So this is how Brazil is using technology… by providing to their people security and efficiency.  Soon you will no longer need pins to log in to your account via an ATM.  You will simply swipe your card, and place your finger on the finger pad and you will be identified and prompted to your account information.

I am amazed to hear about this, because for so many years, I constantly hear how Brazil is a 3rd world country and how it has all these issues, but truth be told, we seem to be more advanced than in America since I still haven’t seen an ATM that has fingerprint biomedics.

The Use of Technology

  •  I was born in Barcelona, Spain. So the technology then and now is pretty much very similar than the United States.  I encountered here in America with some people that think Spain is a develop country or that is located somewhere in South America. Spain is a European country and is a technological and industrially advanced country committed to innovation and research development. Today, Spain is focused in renewal energy such as solar and wind.

When I moved to New York in 2002, the first thing my mom did is to set up Skype and send me her username. So twice a week we both would connect and not only chat but see each other in real time through the webcam.  Another example of the parallel technology between Spain and the U.S. is the mobile devices. All my family owns an Iphone (their phones were purchased in a Spanish Apple store).  So what we did is the following: there is an app in the Iphone and even in other phone devices such as blackberry and HTC that is called “What’s up”. Well, the five of us (my Dad, mom, sister and brother who lives in Geneva, Switzerland) we all installed that application and created a chat group. So we can chat t and keep each other posted via text, pictures, and videos. It is undoubtedly that technology really helps the communication among all of us. So the technology in Spain is really similar than the American one, specially nowadays in the globalization world we all live in.

EXTRA CREDIT These Are the 25 Worst Passwords of 2012

What tips does the CEO of SplashData give for creating a unique password?

Megain Slain which is the CEO of SplashData says it’s best to have differente password for all of your accounts… If one of your accounts gets hacked into, the possibility of your other accounts being in jeopardy is high if you have the same password for all of your account.  But if you have different passwords for all of your accounts, one password gets broken, and your other accounts are still safe.   Mergain goes to advice on how to created complex passwords; one way of doing this is thinking of passwords as paraphrases such as ‘dog eats bone’ and add different characters to the sentence such as slash, underscore, exclamation marks, etc…  Your password will look something like this: ‘dog_eats_bones!’

There are other ways of making your passwords more complicated, such as usingt he first letter of each word within a sentence and adding capital and characters to make it even harder to breat.  For example, take the sentence ‘my cat sleeps under the tree’ and you created McSUtT32#

Why are passwords important?

Passwords are important because we store so much personal information within our devices as well as in the internet.  The damage that a person can do with your information is endless.  It can go far beyond just identity theft.  But imagine the information you transmit in your emails to your closed friends and family, or even business wise; if someone can get a hold of that information, it can harm you extensively.  Also, when you bank online, would you want anyone knowing how to access your account?  They can make purchases, clean out your account, and maybe even open another account under your credentials.

If we don’t protect ourselves with passwords, we are hading our lives to strangers that can make it a living hell tryng to get it back.
