I am currently doing an accounting internship at a custom furniture design company at the New York Design Center. My work mostly revolves around accounts payable, but I am exposed to other areas of accounting involved in the company.

I use excel at work to keep record of the company’s cash balance. I keep a record of the checks that were sent (date and check #), payments the company receives (date and sales order #). I then input the values on a sheet that keeps record of the current month’s balance.

With someone who has a finance background and works with finance clients I can tell you that using excel is very resourceful and now a days needed for day to day operations. One can compile balance sheets, income statements, do ratios, financial reports, expense reports and many other finance/accounting items.

MS Excel isn’t just a program in todays age, but rather a necessary tool for business operations.

Any student of business should know its basic functions as it can be used in everyday life as well.

I actually use to record my expenses and balance everything out and do an analysis for a few months because I was trying to decrease my expenses.
