Our task was an enlightening experience. I always had noticed a variety of numbers and symbols on most plastics cups, plastic utensils and plates however; I never bothered to really figure out what they were. Additionally, I never knew how many kinds of plastics existed. The names of plastics were crazy tongue twisters and all varied in danger level. It is alarming how long most of these plastics take to biodegrade, some can take up to 1milion years. In a way it will always be inside or on something. This can be very harmful to the sea and sea creatures. An alarming thing I noticed is how we don’t even think twice when it comes to when we are using it and when we are throwing it out. I use some form of plastic daily, if not hourly, its so alarming how environmentally unfriendly but essential this material is. I also found how much oil it takes to make this product to be very interesting. In a way plastic is really just chemically treated oil. Honestly I don’t feel like I found a single positive thing about plastic. It is terrible for the environment, it is so poisonous, and it can cause us as humans to be infertile, SCARY!! It makes me think what kind of alternatives can we really create. Maybe just make thinner cheaper glass? Or maybe metal alternatives (although on second thought, that sound sort of gross). It is almost as if we are going to be stuck with plastic since its probably the cheapest and safest to make, or at least that’s what I am told. As long as it is making someone money I am guessing we will never find an alternative, since everything is a business. Well there goes our planet and our species ha-ha.
