A Society is only established once a group of individuals comes together under terms agreed to by the majority. That’s what the term social contract stems from when you agree to be a part of a country, state, or even community you put yourself in the mind frame to abide by the regulation that is within said community. The purpose of a society that establishes a social contract is to maintain order so that the people can live in a manner that is of benefit to the entire community. Which then transitions to this idea of a full citizen. A full citizen is not only somebody who has been born into the country, it is an individual who identifies with the values of a nation and pledges allegiance to the constitution of that country. The reason for a citizen being someone who pledges allegiance to the constitution is because the constitution is a document that outlines the principles on which any government structure is founded.
The project James Baldwin chose to undertake is to be a journalist who documented the relationships between people of blacks and whites. Which is the reason why he focused on MLK, Medgar, and Malcolm X. They were the leaders of the Civil rights movement and were the ones who experienced the true depths of the hatred blacks endured. James Baldwin also felt guilty because he wasn’t able to be there for his people during those tough battles so he wanted to be a witness and use his writings to bring awareness. I felt that this documentary has this heavy feeling to it almost as if we can see this recurring theme even today. With him talking about a woman dying from a knee on the neck. It makes me think that the reason why we continue to deal with these problems as a nation is that we are human and thus imperfect. We will never have a utopian society where these problems will be truly fixed; they can only become slightly better through time. Which is a truly sobering thought.
