In the Ted Talk, the speaker talks about how she did not like ballet anymore because she was not given a chance and was not accepted because she was black. At that time she would think why no one stood up for people in this situation and say how wrong it is. Need unlikely allies if they want to see change happen. Need to be willing to take the help or change takes too long. If the same people speak up, the same results will happen. To show the effect, she then talks about how a white ballet teacher came to school and taught ballet there because of how black girls were not given the chance. The teacher is an unlikely ally because the situation does not affect her but she is fighting for their inequity. She mentioned, “You know, allies often stand on the sidelines waiting to be called up. But what if unlikely allies led out in front of issues? Like what if Black and Native American people stood in front of immigration issues? Or what if white people led the charge to end racism? Or what if men led the charge on pay equity for women? Or what if heterosexual people stood in front of LGBTQ issues? And what if able-bodied people advocated for people living with disabilities?” She mentions this to make people think of just how impactful these types of allies would be and how much change could come out of it.
The podcast is connected to the ted talk as it mentions implicit bias. In society, people are judgmental of people from just how they perceive someone without knowing all the facts. This is what causes things like people thinking another person is suspicious and then a police officer shooting them for what is most of the time for no reason. The podcast talks about how it’s usually implicit bias rather than racism that causes police officers to kill people in “confrontation”.
Personally, I do not have a hidden hatred for no one. I’m not judgmental harshly but sometimes I do notice people and just wonder what they are like because it is fascinating how everyone lives different lives to some extent. And with the whole implicit bias thing, anyone is capable of anything so it’s like you never know. Sometimes you just gotta be real vigilant to suspect someone is up to something. And even with just some suspicion there has to be some sort of evidence.
