In the Ted Talk “Want a More Just World? Be an Unlikely Ally” Dwinita Mosby Tyler explains why showing up and fighting for people who face injustices outside of their own lived experience leads to a more equal and just future for everyone. Tyler contends that change requires allies—not just any allies, but “unlikely allies” inside the majority or oppressor groups, as she puts them. Some of the recommendations she presented were men leading the drive for paid equality for women, white people leading the charge to end racism, Blacks and indigenous speaking up for immigrants, and so on. To continue with, in the podcast “The Air We Breathe: Implicit Bias And Police Shootings,” on the other hand, focuses on Terence Crutcher, a Black man slain by Betty Shelby, a white cop. Crutcher was shot and murdered by Officer Shelby just because he put his hands back in his pockets after raising them in the air, only to discover that he was unarmed. Scoot Wood tries to justify the white actions of the police by arguing that Crutcher was shot because he was a big man, not because he’s such a non-cooperative African-American. He goes on to say that she isn’t afraid of black people and that she was recently at an all-black high school homecoming football game. The victim’s sister, on the other hand, believes that her brother was subjected to police brutality because he was a Black guy, not a large one. A father, brother, and prominent community member were assassinated.
Even Though, I been part of the groups that get discriminated and know what that feeling is. Sometimes I feel like standing up for others is something that I shouldnt get involved in. The Ted Talks and Podcast made me realize the importance of standing up for others and how much a change that could make. In order to combat injustice and achieve a more equitable world, we should feel obligated to assist oppressed groups outside of our own experiences.
Standing up for others can be hard, but it’s easier if we do it together. It was hard for me to watch people justify unwarrented murder in the podcast and it made me wonder if I would speak out about it too.
