After listening to the Ted Talk “Want a more just world? Be an unlikely ally,” I came to the realization that many people complain about issues in our society and do nothing about it themselves. There are many issues that are plaguing our society such as racism, homophobia, and immigration just to name a few. The minorities that suffer these issues fight against but there is just so much that they can do themselves. However what would happen if the majority also advocated for their equality. What if a white person spoke against racism if a straight person spoke against homophobia if a citizen spoke against illegal immigrants? This would surely help the minorities in the fight for their cause. This was my biggest takeaway from the Ted Talk. The podcast “The Air We Breathe: Implicit Bias And Police Shootings” also discusses societal issues. The podcast references a black man, Terrance Crutcher who was murdered by a white officer. In the story, Scott Wood attempts to defend the officer by saying Crutcher was shot because he was a big man. His justification doesn’t even make sense as even being a big man doesn’t justify killing an unarmed person. The fact is that Crutcher was killed because he was African American. Both pieces fall under the issue of social inequality. This is what causes homophobia, racism, and even what caused Crutcher to be killed.
Though I am an open-minded person, I personally think I am still ignorant towards many societal issues. This may be a result of the environment I was brought up in. This has conditioned me to be the way I am. However, after listening to these podcasts I have become even more open-minded. This is because I realized that if I continue ignorant I would just be contributing to the same societal problems that I am speaking against. So going forward I plan to be less ignorant and look and things from multiple perspectives before I judge.
It’s nice to read about how someone’s perspectives change and improve after reading a piece of media. I’m glad that you learned alot!
