Rhetoric elements are used everywhere whether we see it or not. It can be written, sung, and shown to the audience. This ad is very hard to lean to when it comes to deciphering which category of rhetoric this falls into. The video is on the new phone, iphone 12. Although you can build a case on pathos, ethos fits better for this video.

Apple is almost a monopoly when it comes to selling phones and many other technologies so when they come out with a new product an ad will shortly follow. I was more drawn to pathos when it comes to this video because I got a cracked Iphone 7 which needs replacing. But further in the video I realized it would be more reasonable for me to get the new iphone because of the significant upgrades on my current phone. In the video they show different features of the camera for example the wide angle and the ultra wide angle. Three different cameras where my phone only has two. When the opportunity presents itself taking photos is really a struggle because the quality of an outdated phone compared to the newer versions is noticeable. In the ad it previews 5G which is also a relatively newer feature on the iphones. This is also an enticing feature because it allows the phone to perform at a faster rate. Rather than the older version of the iphone constantly being tackled by freezes and crashes. And the bias of buying a new phone every year like some consumers do does not apply to me but the ad was so compelling and it really almost comes down to the split decision of ethos and pathos. The ad gives you a feel good stimulant but convinces the audience with reasons as to why you should buy the new phone.

  1. I like how you used two rhetorical elements in your post. I agree with the appeal to get a new phone because of all the new features. Whenever a new iPhone comes out it always looks so cool and makes you feel left out because of all the new features that aren’t available on the older models.
