The article “Asian Americans are still caught in the trap of the ‘Model Minority’ Stereotype. And it Creates inequality for All” discusses what a model minority is. A model minority is can be defined as a non-threatening person of color as stated by the article. This means that though they are of a different ethnic group, they are still accepted into society compared to other minority groups. In the article, Asian Americans are considered as this group. They are the most successful of all minorities. This label is dangerous as it can cause confusion and betrayal within the group. This happens when they are faced with the decision to either side with other minorities or the majority which in this case would be whites. In fear of losing the label that allows them to live comfortably as minorities, they choose the whites and disregard other minority groups. An example from the article would be when Japanese Americans fought against Germans and Japanese to prove their “Americanness.” This label serves none other than the majority. By creating this label they have placed Asian Americans in a trap. They live their lives trying to prove themselves as Americans all while disregarding their own people and other minorities.
The reason Nguyen says that “the end of Asian Americans only happens with the end of racism and capitalism” is that both cause a division between people. These cause people to be in constant competition with each other all the time. Most races often compete about who suffers more from racism than the other. This should not be so. No one should be suffering from racism in the first place. With capitalism, we compete to see who can generate more wealth all while the majority most of the benefits. This essay made me realize that instead of helping each other as minorities, we are trampling over each other while the majority sits comfortably and we suffer. Instead, we should help each other to overcome the situations that we have been placed in.
I agree that this could be dangerous because sometimes when you try to fit in you leaving thereal part of you behind. Labeling at all should stop happening and everyone should be able to live how they want without having to feel about it. I also agree that sometimes minorities instead of helping each other they bring each other down or are “competing” about who living the worst life.
I like the way you were able to connect this event to another event in history. It creates a better overall analysis.
